pune-metroPune Metro project is the finest addition to the Pune’s upbringing as a futuristic metropolitan city. The project got approval from the state cabinet in June 2012, but the delay in the metro project will result into a cost escalation which will be the biggest issue for the Pune Municipal Corporation. The escalation of cost may harm the productivity and end results of the vital metro project. The project had an initial completion date of 2014 for the phase 1 which was later postponed to 2017 while approving the Pune metro project by the state cabinet. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) report for the Pune Metro expected that the phase one of the project would get completed by May 2014. But later in the approval process this deadline was shifted to the year 2017 but now the metro project deadline for the first phase has been pushed to 2021.The shift of the deadline for completion date may have consequences which will affect the overall affordability and the success of this vital project. The first phase of the metro project from Vanaz to Ramvadi stretching for 14.925 Km will be completed by 2021 with the estimated cost of Rs 3,223 crore whereas the second phase connecting Chinchwad-Swargate will cost about Rs 6,960 crore. The combined total cost of the project is now estimated at Rs 10,183 crore which is increased by about Rs 2,199 crore from the estimated price in the year 2009. Any further project delays will result into extra expenses for the construction of the project. The increase in the construction cost has also increased the estimated fares of the metro which will now range between Rs 13 to Rs 45 per head.Although the DMRC submitted the detailed report on the Pune Metro project, the Pune Municipal Corporation has not carried out the detailed study of the report. There are numerous issues associated with the route on which the Metro is proposed to be run. The metro project is now estimated to complete by the 2021 with increase in the proposed cost of the project.
