Creating Auspicious Interiors for Pooja Room

In Indian culture god is given immense importance at every step of our lives. Nobody can deny the fact that all of us start our day with god’s blessings and that is why we all have a special place for our god in our hearts as well as in our homes. This special place is called ‘Pooja Room’. We can make our pooja room more auspicious by following some simple tips that can have major impact on our lives.

  • The pooja room in the building should always be in the east, north or north-east corner.
  • The idols should be kept in the east or the west of the pooja ghar and the faces of idols should never be in the north or south direction.
  • The idols should not be kept facing each other.Have you ever seen them like that. No! It should face one side, all of them.
  • Broken figures of idol and torn pictures should be removed immediately.
  • No bells should be hanged in the pooja room and if a mandir is built of wood or steel then the top of the same should not be pointed or sharp.
  • It should always be kept in mind that a pooja room should not be in the bedroom.
  • Toilets should not be attached to the pooja room and it should not be above or below the pooja room.
  • The doors and windows of the pooja room should be in the east or the north.
  • It is considered to be auspicious if the worship room is built in pyramid shape if possible.
  • The idols should not be exactly in front of the entrance gate.
  • The cupboards or almirahs should be kept towards western or southern wall and the height of the same should not be more than the height at which the idols are placed.
  • The colour of walls of the pooja room should preferably be white, light yellow or light blue as it creates peace and calmness in the environment.
  • Avoid keeping heavy figures of lord Ganesha in the pooja room but light weight figures and pictures can be placed.
  • The pooja room should be on the ground floor but never be in the basement.
  • The lamp placed in the pooja room should be in front of the god.
  • Face of the god should not be covered from anything like flowers or garlands.
  • Pooja room should not be used for any other purpose like storage.
  • One very important thing is that one should never ever place photographs of dead people in the pooja room.
  • One should always keep the worship room neat and clean.
  • Lighting fragrance agarbattis or candles in the worship room helps in bringing good fortune.
  • The roof of the room should not have ventilation or windows.
  • Money or valuables should not be hid in the pooja room.
  • Automatic doors or spring closing doors should not be used for pooja room.
  • Make sure not to sleep in the pooja room
  • The person should face east while worshiping in the pooja room
  • Pooja room should not be adjacent to bathrooms or toilets
  • Pooja room should not be kept under a staircase
  • The roof of the pooja room should be preferably dome shaped in order to attract maximum positive energy into the home.
