Corporation Denies Information about Top Property Tax Defaulters

chennaiChennai: The RTI application seeking the top property tax defaulters has been denied by the revenue department in Chennai Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Corporation has denied all the applications seeking information about top defaulters which are defaulting on property tax payments.The Public Information officer (PIO) of the revenue department said that the providing such information publicly would excessively divert the resources of the public authority or may result as detrimental to the safety or preservation of the record.Sections 4(1) (a) and 4(1) (b) of RTI act state that regular cataloguing of registers in government offices is mandatory, but no records has been maintained by corporation for top tax defaulters. Such defaulting property tax payers are many in the Chennai Corporation limits which need to be considered.Property tax in Chennai is assessed twice a year, once before April 15 and for the second time before October 15. Yet only about 60 per cent of the property tax payers pay it on time and about 40 per cent default on property tax payments. Municipal Corporation acts harsh on other property tax payers while the top defaulters’ details are hidden from public, even through RTI act.Last year Corporation collected about Rs 306 crore in aarears and there are many defaulters which default each for more than Rs 1 lakh. Official of corporation said that about Rs 500 crore is to be collected through arrears from various establishments.The corporation uploads names of property tax defaulters which are defaulting over Rs 1 lakh on its official website but recently the corporation has modified its plan of uploading such names of defaulters on website.займ на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн
