While exploring the Island city of Mumbai it is recommended to explore the Salsette Island which is situated on the western coast of India in the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai city, Thane and Mira Bhayandar are the part of this vast Island. You may be surprised to know that this island is world’s most populated island covering an area of about 619 square kilometres. The population on the island is approximately 15.1 million which consists of 53% Maharashtrians, 22% Gujaratis, 17 % North Indians, 3% Tamilians, 3% Sindhis and 2% Tuluvas. The native name of this island is Sasashti which is a Marathi language word. It means Sixty six. The Island initially had sixty six villages having communities of farmers, artisans, agriculturists, fishermen, toddy tappers, etc. These communities first converted to Christianity in 55 AD and then to Roman Catholicism when Portuguese invaded India. The Island has Vasai Creek on North, Ulhas River on the North east, Thane creek on the east, Arabian Sea on the South and west. Now let me give you some information about the Island’s natural treasures. The Salsette Island is the home of three huge lakes known as Powai Lake, Tulsi Lake and Vihar Lake. These are three major lakes present on the Island. The last two lakes’ water is used for drinking water for some parts of city. Apart from these, there are many other small and big lakes as well as ponds are present on the island. If you talk about Rivers on the island then let me tell you that the Mithi River (Mahim), Poisar River, Oshivara River, Dahisar River, Ulhas River, etc. are the major rivers here. There are many creeks also present on the island. some of them are Mahim Creek, Marve Creek, Gorai Creek, etc.There are some wetlands on the island like Bombay Harbour on the eastern waterfront, Sewree at the North. Several migratory birds can be seen at Sewree Wetlands. Apart from these, there are also protected swamps in the Mahim area of island. On these wetlands you can find thick mangrove forests.
