If you are frustrated with the stress due to modern life style and the ever growing crowds around you then heading for a tranquil destination which is miles away from the madness of unstoppable city to gain peace of mind and soul is necessary. The garden city Bangaluru is no doubt a wonderful and happening city in the country but sometimes you get tired of your surroundings and look for a place which can rejuvenate you from inside without travelling long distances. So let take a break from your routine and head to a small hill station which is still under wraps and not commercialised like other hill stations. This hill station is known as Yelagiri. The other name for this place is Elagiri which is located off Vaniyambadi- Tirupattur Road in the Vellore district in Tamil Nadu.Yelagiri is a small village with plenty of magnificent hills covered with lush greenery, blooming orchards, rose gardens and a spectacular lake. Yelagiri is spread over an area of 30 km2 with a height of 1410 meters from sea level. It is a hill station since the time of British Rule but still it is not recognised as a popular tourist destination due to lake of development around. I think that is the only reason that this place is still maintained its charm otherwise it will also be one commercialised place with lace of feeling of hill station. But the development is in progress as government is trying to make it a hot tourist spot by providing adventurous sports facilities like paragliding and rock climbing here. You may be surprised to know that the entire Yelagiri was once the property of a single owner known as Yelagiri Zamindar Family but later on Government of India took over it from them in early 1950. In Reddiyur you can find the house of the Zamindar which is still standing tall.This place is a paradise for trekking lovers as you get multiple choices for trekking here. There are 14 small hamlets, hills and some temples on the hills to explore. Swamimali hill is said to be highest point of Yelagiri with a height of 4338 ft and no doubt it the most favourite among the trekkers as on reaching the top you forget the tiredness and start soothing your eyes with panoramic views of surroundings. It is a 3 km to 3 km fro trekking to reach the sharp top of the hill which has a cake shape. Amid the thick reserved forest you get to explore different trekking trails on this hill with loads of fresh air and music of bird chirping. The base of this hill is Mangalam village. Javadi and Palamathi hills also provide trekking opportunities but they are smaller than Swamimalai hill.The Jalagamparai Waterfalls is at a little distance of five km from the Yelagiri downhill can be explored as it is one of the most spectacular falls in the state. You can enjoy a close view of the stunning valley from a telescope observatory situated near Yelagiri Hills. If you want to enjoy the nature at its best then spend at least one or two days here. The sunset at the Yelagiri lake is an amazing experience to watch. Boating facility is available in the lake. The YMCA Camp Centre arranges accommodation, dormitory accommodation, camp activities, trekking assistance, etc. for the visitors. YMCA is a non profit organization.The entire route from Bangaluru to Yelagiri is in good condition with well placed signboards to follow. One needs to follow the Bangaluru Chennai National Highway towards Krishnagiri. The distance from Bangaluru to Yelagiri is approximately 150 kilometres. The weather is pleasant all through the year so you can visit the place anytime.
