Pune has rich culture and thus it is called the cultural capital of Maharashtra. You will find different religions and religious places here in specific regions of city. We always talked about temples but today we will have a tour to the churches of Pune city. A church is a religious place of Christians but anyone who believes in almighty can visit these churches as after all it is a home of god who has different names, appearances and devotees have different ways to worship but ultimately the supreme power is just one whom we call God. There are many notable churches in Pune. Some of them are as follows:
1. The Church of the Holy NameThe Church of The Holy Name means Pavitra Naam Devalay in Hindi. It is one beautiful church standing tall even after more than a century time. In the year 1885 the church came into existence. The construction is awesome and an outstanding example of British architecture. The speciality of this church is its bell tower which is 130 feet high. The church of the Holy Name is also significant because of its eight bells that make it the only Church in the entire south Asia having eight bells. The bells that were being made by Tailor & Sons Company have the “Holy Name of Jesus” carved on it. This church was built using bricks and glasses. This church is located at 4, Guruwar Peth , Punch Hauda, Pune-42.
2. Christ church The Christ church is another important church of Pune city in the state of Maharashtra. It was actually built in the year 1895 but the services already started before the construction of the current church and people used to worship in schools or bungalows of missionaries or in rented hall. But when the number of people worshipping increased then the place fell very short of space and thus the new church was built but the church was so popular that it needed further expansion that is why it again extended in the year 1979 to accommodate large number of followers. After ten years in 1989 a nursery school commenced in the premises of church and which is currently turned into High School. This church is located at 381, Rasta Peth in Pune.
3. All Saints ChurchThis church was built in the year 1869 during British rule. The speciality of this church is that it was built using mostly imported material like the glasses used in the churches were imported from Belgium while the wood required making doors, windows as well as other wooden things used in churches were imported from Burma. The glass work looks quite authentic, colourful and attractive. The main structure is built using stone instead of bricks. You can see the flags of that time as they are preserved to remember the history of the church. The records of death, birth and marriage are maintained quite well since 1869. The All Saints Church does not look like other churches as the structure is quite different but historic. This church is situated at Mumbai – Pune Road in Khadki in Pune.
4. Methodist Marathi ChurchThis is quite an old but historic church which was commenced from the house of Mr. Anglow Desuza on 28th September in the year 1872. The current building of church is beautifully designed with designer glasses having different images that are fitted into the windows of church.
