Why and How to Conserve Water in Apartments

Water is the most important part of our lives. We can’t even think of living without water for a day. In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, etc the demand for water is increasing day by day but the supply is not sufficient and here comes the water crisis problem  but have you ever thought that how much water you need in a day and how much water you are using. Actually if you analyse your daily water consumption then only you will realise that you are actually wasting a lot of water. It has become a challenge today to meet the rising demand for water because of our negligence.Pune is fast developing city with a lots of real estate development all around and with this the increasing demand for water is obvious. When the demand is more than supply the imbalance occurs and ultimately the end user suffers with water crisis. Mr. Aukta Shri Zagade has raised a billion dollar question about leakage of water. He has proved by his statistical data that Pune is getting 14 TMC water supplies per year out of which only 7TMC reaches to Punekars. The remaining water is leaked, wasted by the tankers in pune. • Rain water harvesting – it is a system in which the water from rainwater is collected from the surfaces that directly receives rainfall. In houses or buildings this water can be collected from the roof tops and stored in the tanks or vessels that can be used in the periods of scarcity. In some states it is mandatory.
• Recycling of water – water recycling can help in conserving drinking water as the demand will go down. Recycled water costs 5 to 8 Rs. per ltr while   production of fresh water costs 18 Rs. per ltr.
• Individual meter system – individual metering system in buildings and apartments helps in conserving water and gives actual amount of bill based on actual consumption. It results in 15% water saving that is 8000gallons per unit per year.
• Grey water system – it is wastes water from non toilet plumbing systems such as hand basins, washing machines, showers and baths. It is easier to treat and recycle. This system has the potential to save one third of domestic mains water usage.
• Checking for leakages – every society or apartment owners should regularly check for leakages as it can save a lot of water to get wasted.
• Spreading awareness – all citizens should adopt water saving techniques and spread the same message among others in order to stop unknowingly wasting of water.
• Dual piping system – it helps in reducing consumption of fresh drinking water up to 40 %. It is not wise to use drinking water for flushing, car washing, floor cleaning, etc. Fresh water should be used for primary requirements like drinking, bathing, kitchen, etc while recycled water, rain water and grey water should be used for gardening, car washing, floor cleaning, flushing toilets, etc.
• Dual flush system – all toilets should have dual flushing systems in order to stop wastage of unnecessary system. Single flush system wastes a lot of water that is not required.

If the population continues to grow and the demand for water will hit new highs then the water crisis could be the biggest problem in front of us. The city like Pune will run out of water within fifteen years. Water conservation is the first and the most important thing to be considered in offices, apartments and homes. They can farm groups and can encourage other people to conserve water.
