Bold, loud and colorful- these three words briefly highlight the Indian culture on a whole. Watch our traditional dance forms, listen to our songs, watch our typical Bollywood movies and you will know sophistication and elegance are acquired tastes and not what we have inherited from our tradition. So it should come as no surprise if we want to decorate our homes in the same bold and colorful manner. This kind of décor is popularly referred to as ‘kitsch’. The word also refers to a rather cheap and tacky taste but Indian kitsch is cool. And it is permeating our homes as well as our fashion and design. But there is more to it than just this.Color: The key to kitsch is color. You can be as playful with the colors as you want to be and that too with over the top bright and loud colors like fluorescent green, fuchsia pink, lemon yellow, red and electric blue. Décor items: In Indian kitsch there is no dearth of decorative items. And many new designers are coming up specializing in kitsch designs. But if you do not want to spend big bucks on designer items just look around and you will see kitsch everywhere. Old film posters, paintings made in Mughal art style, pop art mixed with Indian elements or anything colorful and peppy object can be a part of kitsch décor. You can design your own kitschy item by painting your old tin trunk in a variety of bright opaque colors and using it as a center table or use Photoshop to make your own Andy Warhol painting. You can even take photos of brightly colored elements such as kites, bangles, painted walls and all sorts of street art (that may or may not be considered art at all) and make a photo collage in vibrant colors and hang it in your living room.
Motifs: Indian kitsch has some very recognizable motifs such as the elephant, Madhubala, Mughal-e-Azam, lotus, Buddha, autorickshaw, scooter, truck etc. Any sort of floral or geometric pattern can suffice as a kitschy motif. Many stores sell items with these motifs and the items vary from bedcovers to mugs, glasses, cushion covers, candle stands, coasters, wall hangings etc.Though you might want to go overboard with these heady colors and designs, it will be advisable not to overdo them. Your overall room décor should match the kitschy element.
