The garden city Bengaluru has a lot to be explored apart from its magnificent garden spread. Let me take you to one of the most attractive structures in the city used as a seat of state legislature of Karnataka. This building is known as Vidhana Soudha which a must visit place because of its exceptionally beautiful mixture of different styles of architecture influenced by Indian and western structural design. The inception of Vidhana Soudha was the idea of Mr. Kengal Hanumanthaiah who tried his best to materialize his idea into an architectural excellence. No doubt he put efforts in each stage of constructing this magnificent structure.  The idea of creating a building like Vidhana Soudha clicked him while visiting Europe, Russia, United States and many other such countries.   The construction activity started on July 13 in the year 1951 when the foundation was laid by Jawaharlal Nehru who was the first Prime Minister of independent India at that time. It took almost five and a half year time to complete the building. The building does represents different styles like Indo saracenic, Neo Dravidian styles, Rajasthani, Chola, Kannad, etc. Due to the hard work and keen interest of Mr. K. Hanumanthaiah into creating this building Vidhana Soudha was ready to use in the year 1956.If we go into details of structure then we can call it a marvelous creation as expensive granite is used in the building which comprises of five floors among which four floors are above the ground level while one floor is in the basement. The area it covers is 700 by 350 feet and thus it becomes the largest government building in entire country. The twelve forty feet heighted Bengaluru granite columns at the eastern side of building enhance the grandness of the Vidhana Soudha. The granite was brought here from excavation spots near Mallasandra and Hessaraghtta. There are forty five steps approximately 200 feet in width approach the building entrance. The top of the building has a dome in the centre. It measures sixty feet in its diameter with the National Emblem on its top. Around five thousand laborers and fifteen hundred chisellers, wood carvers put efforts to shape this outstanding building structure. The interesting fact here is that among the unskilled laborers most of them were convicts and were freed by government after completing this majestic building. It took only Rupees 1.75 Crore to shape up this splendid structure while the maintenance cost which includes painting, repairs and other regular expenses) of the building today is more than its cost of construction. The building is equipped with high tech security systems in order to prevent any terrorist activity or any other threat to the structure. The security system includes ten feet high steel fence surrounding the building, watch towers, various scanning equipments, etc. This system is installed only after almost forty five years of inception of the building. Entry inside the building is prohibited due to security reasons. A replica of Vidhana Soudha is built in 2005 at the south of the building called Vikasa Soudha to use as an annex housing legislative offices. The Vidhana Soudha is located opposite the High Court of Karnataka in Cubbon Park near Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (K.S.L.T.A.). The building looks more attractive and worth paying a visit when it bathes in light on Sundays and public holidays.
