Trimbakeshwar – A Sacred Pilgrimage Destination

TrimbakeshwarWhile exploring the ancient religious places of Maharashtra state a place known as Trimbakeshwar came to my sight. It is also known as Trambakeshwar situated in a small town called Trimbak of Nashhik District in the state of Maharashtra at an altitude of 700 metres from sea level. It is basically famous for a historic Hindu Temple with the main deity as Lord Shiva and is said to be the one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas in the country. Situated just 28 kilometres from the city of Nasik this town is the origin of Holy River Godavari which is the longest river in peninsular India. The sacred River Godavari has its origin in Bramhagiri Mountains and it flows down to merge into the sea at Rajahmundry. Though it originates from the mountains Hindus believe that Kusavarta is the origin of the river. It is a Kund which is considered extremely sacred bathing place by Hindus.Trimbakeshwar is a very special place of religious significance and many mythological stories are attached to this place. Initially only the Jyotirlinga was there but later on a beautiful temple was built here by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao also called Peshwa Nanasaheb in the mid eighteenth century. The town came into existence even years after the temple constructed and thus the town is known as Trimbak after the name of the Temple Trimbakeshwar. The ancient scriptures explain this place to be Mythologically significant. It is said that this place was the birth place of Lord Ganesha. It is called The Place of Tri Sandhya Gayatri. Apart from this it is also the place where sacred sage Gautama resided. He relieved from his sin of Gohatya (killing of cow) by worshipping Lord Shiva at Brahmagiri Mountains so that the River Ganges can down flow the mountains and he can take bath in it. His wish was fulfilled and in the form of river Godavari River Ganges appeared from Kushavarta. This marvellous temple is built using black basalt rock. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the speciality of the Jyotirlinga here is that it has three faces symbolising Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva). The image once had the world famous Nassak Diomond which was taken away by British during the third Anglo Maratha War and currently it is with Edward J. Hand who is a Trucking Firm executive of Greenwich, Connecticut in USA.The Jyotirlinga is wearing away due to excess use of water but devotees take it as a symbol of deteriorating nature of human society. There is jewelled crown over the gold mask of Tridev Linga. It is said that this crown is quite ancient and might be from the period of Pandwas. It is adorned with diamonds, emeralds and other such precious stones. If you want to have a look of the crown then you can visit the temple on Monday between 4.00pm and 5.00 pm. The impressive black stone temple representing excellent architecture is situated at the foothills of Brahmgiri Mountain. The entrance of the temple is huge with balconies at the upper side resembling to Maratha Architecture.People come here with faith of getting their problems solved like to cure an illness, to bring good luck, ending of bad times, to get a child, to cure the sin of killing a cobra, removing financial crisis, etc. they perform various religious rituals to get what they want. These rituals include Narayan Nagbali, Kalsarpa Shanti, Tripindi Ritual, etc. The holiness of the place can be imagined by the fact that if anyone performs the death rituals (shraddha) here the soul gets salvation or Moksha. If sources believed then it is also said that Lord Rama (one of the incarnation of lord Vishnu) performed ‘Shraddha’ at the Godavari River. The town of Trimbak is dominated by Brahmin Community. There are many Vedic Gurukuls, ashrams as well as Maths dedicated to Ashtang Yoga which is a Hindu art of living. The area surrounding Trimbakeshwar is quite green with the backdrop of mountains. During monsoon the place becomes more inviting with zero level of pollution.
