Thanthania Kalibari is located in Shyam Bazaar. It is quite easy to locate this temple as when you go to Shyam Bazaar using the route Bidhan Sarani, you will find the temple on your left side. There are two different dates are believed to be the construction date of temple as some people say it was built in the year 1803 while the others believe it was created even before in the year 1703. As per the English calendar the foundation date of the temple is 1703 but the majority opinion goes with 1803. One of the stones inside the temple has inscription written as 1110 as per Bengali calendar which says it was built in 1703. Thanks to god there is no confusion about the creator of the temple. It was built by a devotee named Shankar Ghosh. The temple has Goddess Siddheshwari as the main deity. She is one of the forms of Goddess Kali. The image of Mother Goddess Kali in the temple is made of clay and is recreated every year. there is a small image of Lord Shiva is also situated in the temple. Good numbers of devotees as well as tourists visit this centuries old temple of goddess frequently. At the occasion of Kali puja the place is flooded with devotees who come here to offer their prayers. The special Kali Puja is organised on the occasion of Diwali. The temple is beautifully decorated.You can visit the temple any day of the week as it is open on all days but Tuesdays and Saturdays are said to be more auspicious days to visit the temple according to the Hindu mythology. During lunar Eclipse or as per Hindu belief on Amavasya one should visit the temple of Thanthania.
