Tiruchirapalli commonly known as Trichy is a culturally affluent city of Tamil Nadu. It is situated on the banks of river Cauvery and is the fourth largest city in Tamil Nadu. This temple is also known as the Rock Fort Temple. The rock is almost three billion years old. This temple is located on the peak of the Rock fort Hill. Uchii Pillayar was built during the period of Pallavas. Uchii means top and Pillayar is the other name of Lord Ganesha. This temple is at a height of 273 ft. and has 417 steps. It is the combination of two famous 7th century Hindu Temples. One is Lord Shiva and other of Lord Ganesha. It was said that Vibhishana, younger brother of the Asura King Raavana was returning home after coronation of Rama. He had the idol of Lord Ranganathar with him and he was warned if he keeps that idol down, it would get affixed there forever. When he went to take bath he handed over the idol to Lord Ganesha who had disguised himself as a Brahmin boy. Ganesha kept the idol on the ground and ran away. The idol got fixed to the ground. Seeing this Vibhishana went in search of the boy who revealed himself as Lord Ganesha. Vibhishana apologized and returned to Lanka.It is said that the place where Lord Ganesha placed Lord Ranganathar deity, is the place where this temple was built. It is about seven kilometers away from the Rock fort temple. The main temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It has 21 Gopurams (towers) and perhaps the largest in India. The temple complex is stretched out over 156 acres. The temple consists of seven concentric rectangular enclosures. This is the only temple in India with seven enclosures.Thaymanaswamy Temple:
It is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is carved in middle of the rock fort and is built adjoining the Uchii Pillayar temple. The massive stone statue of Lord Shiva is in form of Linga. This temple was built by the Pallavas. The temple shows beautiful art forms from the olden days. The paintings on ceiling are amazing. There are holy shrines for Goddess Parvathi and Mahalakshmi.According to the mythology there was lady named Rathnavathi who lived on banks of River Cauvery. She was suffering from extreme labor pain during her pregnancy. Her mother did not arrive to help her on time; she pleaded to God for help. At that time Lord Shiva took the form of her mother and helped her deliver the child. From that day she was praised as Thayum Ana Swamy (The Lord who took the form of a mother).These are some of the most famous temples of Trichy.
