Shree Krishna Temple in Nigdi – Spiritual Place Adding Glory to Pune

Pune is an important city of Maharashtra state in terms of religious, cultural and social activities. There are many popular religious shrines in and around Pune. Every nook and corner has a beautiful temple either big or small. Some of these holy places are extremely popular while some are less known to the population. In this article I am talking about a temple which may not be known to everyone in the city but is worth visiting and offering prayers. This is Shree Krishna Temple located in Nigdi just next to the Mumbai Pune Highway. The architectural style which is clearly visible to build the temple is southern architecture.  I must say that this temple is quite high-tech in its functioning. The temple has an interesting story behind its inception. During the year 1985 some youngsters felt the need to have a place for religious, cultural and social activities. They formed a group called Shree Krishna Bhajan Sangham. Inintially this group started performing bhajans at various places to materialise their objective of creating a holy shrine. Their efforts were fruitful and on 12th September 1987 on the day of Janmashtmi the idol of lord Krishna was installed in the presence of hundreds of devotees at a piece of land offered by Mr. Kantilal Khinvasara. By now the group was turned into Shree Krishna Charitable Foundation and was registered under Maharashtra Society Act. The construction of the entire premises seen today was created in different phases. By the year 1993 the first phase was complete with a magnificent temple and opened for public prayers as per rules. The second phase of the project which was building a Dwaja Sthamb , started in September 1994 and completed in April 1995.  After two years the third phase construction took place. It included creating place for social and cultural activities. The work started in 1997 and finished by 1999 when a beautiful temple complex was ready to use.  Now the work of fourth phase which includes Rajagopuram and Nadapura (Anakotil) is in progress. You get the feeling of traditional Keralite architecture when you get inside. There are elaborate murals of gods at the outer circumference like Dashavatara, the thrimurthis, and Krishna. There are also seven small temples housing Navagraha Murthis of Ganapti, Ayappa, Hanuman, Vaishnav Devi, Shiva, Subramanya and Nagas.  This holy shrine of Lord Krishna is not restricted to any cast or religion as anyone from any cast or religious belief can come here to offer prayers to almighty as god may have different faces and names but there is only one god in the world. You just need to be faithful to the god. The temple and its functions are well maintained by the committee of the temple. The temple complex is given for religious, cultural or social activities like marriages but an advance booking is necessary. It can be done online. For performing Pooja and other religious activities also one can book time and date online by doing registration on the site of temple. The website is in the name of ShreeKrishnaMandir.com.
