When we talk about Pune’s historical places it is impossible to forget the beautiful and strong ancient monument Shinde Chhatri. It is one of the greatest architectural examples in Pune. It is located in Wanowrie which is close to Fatima Nagar and on the way to Hadapsar, Pune. The full name is Mahadji Shinde Chatri which was built in the memory of Shreemant Maharaja Mahadji Shinde. He was born in the year 1730 and died in February 1794. He was the fifth son of Shreemant Ranoji Rao Maharaj Shinde. Shree Mahadji shinde served the Maratha army as a Commander in Chief for twenty years between 1760 and 1780 under the Peshawas. He was a great soldier and the memorial is dedicated to him. The Shinde Chhatri was built by Madhavrao Scindhia in the year 1965. The Chhatri has a Samadhi of Mahadji, one Shiva temple which was built by Mahadji himself in the year 1794 the same year in which he died. His last rites were performed here. Currently the Shinde Chhatry is maintained by the Scindhia Devasthan Trust, Gwalior.It represents architectural beauty influenced by Rajasthani architecture. It is still as beautiful as it was at the time of construction. It is totally unaffected by the time. One should not miss the opportunity to visit this exquisite architecture of Pune city which is approachable from all corners of Pune city by government buses or taxies or personal vehicles.
