Instead of being a skyscraper, the building is a ground scraper, that is, it does not pierce the sky but digs into the ground as it is built in an abandoned quarry! Situated at the base of the Tianmenshan Mountain, it is essentially built in a 100 meter deep open quarry. The five-star hotel will have 19 floors with 380 rooms. Two of the floors will be above the ground and on account of the quarry being partly flooded, some of the rooms will also be under water. The underwater levels of the hotel will house an underwater restaurant, an underwater aquarium and some underwater guestrooms. The Lobby of the hotel is shaped like a flying saucer and it is supposedly designed to descends into the pit.The hotel is designed to be extremely eco friendly. Firstly it has not taken up any extra space; it is just using up abandoned space in an extremely innovative manner. It has a green roof and will be using geothermal energy for electricity and heating. The highlight feature of the hotel is the vertical glass atrium which runs through the entire vertical length of the hotel and is a disguised artificial waterfall.The Shimao Wonderland Intercontinental is not just a hotel. It is an extreme sports hotel. Besides various water sports that the artificial lake there is also sports for the lovers of the adrenaline rush such as sky diving, rock climbing and bungee jumping.The hotel has other facilities like a conference room that can easily accommodate over 1000 people at a time, banquet hall, café, spa etc. The hotel is owned by the Intercontinental Hotels Group and designed by the architecture company Atkins which consisted of teams from Bristol and Shanghai.The total construction cost of the hotel can come close to $586 million and staying in the hotel will cost $300 per night.
