Science City:The Most Eminent Landmark of Independent Kolkata

science-cityThough there are many attractions to attract tourists in the city of Kolkata but Science City is something different and one of its kind in India. It is located in the eastern part of city at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and J B S Haldane Avenue in Kolkata. It s equally interesting for young as well as old. It is not only educational but also entertaining. Established in the year 1997 the Science City is the largest science city in Indian Subcontinent. It comes under the National Council of Science Museum (NCSM), Ministry of Culture of Government of India. This centre of science is the concept of Saroj Ghose who was the first director general of National Council of Science Museum (NCSM). The Science City is inaugurated in two parts; one is Convention Centre Complex which is inaugurated on 21st December 1996 while the second part of Science centre is inaugurated on 1st July 1997. The current Science City of Kolkata is the recent addition to the Science centre and its foundation stone is laid on 10th January 2010 by the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. There are many sections in the Science centre which include Showcase of Scientific Applications, the space odyssey, dynamotion, Life Science Corner, Science Park, the Dinosaurs complex, toy train, rope way, etc. In the space centre of Science city there is an auditorium which is in a circular shape and has a dome shaped ceiling that looks like a bowl kept inverted from inside. The Convention Centre here is huge and has all modern amenities to look forward. There are two auditoriums among which the main grand auditorium has the capacity of 2232 people with a stage of 100 performers while the mini auditorium has seating capacity of 392 people with a stage capacity of 30 performers. Apart from these two auditoriums there are eight separate halls with varying capacity from 200 to 250. But one thing is common in all these halls and auditoriums that they all are fully air-conditioned keeping in mind the humid weather of Kolkata city. The auditoriums have advanced audio visual systems to give the best performance. There is a basement also there that can be the perfect venue for the art exhibition or poster presentation. The vast open space behind the main auditorium has various spaces like Durga Mandap, Bengal gallery, Mukta Mancha, food plaza, etc. in this space various scientific exhibitions are organised time to time. In the Science centre you get to experience the simulation of earthquake and tornados. The beautiful collection of live birds & insects along with dinosaurs’ model fetches good crowd. Children specially enjoy this section among others.The various sections of Science are as follows:
