As we are progressing our planet is losing the battle to retain the actual environment natural and fit for healthy living. Who is responsible for this loss? We all individuals are directly and indirectly responsible for this poor condition our Earth. We are feeling the impact of climate change on earth. This problem has come due to making an imbalance between in the environment. The world population is increasing and thus much of the land is being used for residential or commercial purposes. Deforestation because of land requirement led us to natural calamities like floods, tsunami, earthquakes, etc. Pollution from vehicles use, industries and agriculture has contributed in depletion of Ozone layer of the atmosphere. People are crowding urban areas and thus it is becoming difficult to keep these urban areas free of garbage, polluted water and polluted air. Lifestyle habits also one of the major reasons of increased pollution in these areas. In short we all made our best to destroy our mother nature and our home our earth, now it is our responsibility to correct our misbehaviour towards our planet and take some constructive actions to stop all those activities that directly or indirectly harm our environment.
There are a bunch of Non Profit Organisations and people who are working together to improve the condition but this task can be successful only if each one of us actively become a part of this movement of saving our environment and the Earth. An initiative is taken by WWF (World Wide Fund) to spread awareness among the population around the globe to participate in the Earth hour on March 31ST at 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm. All businesses, households as well as companies are encouraged to turnoff lights during this time to mark Earth hour. The response was good but many among us even knowing about the event didn’t participate in this earth saving event. Why? Was it that difficult to switch off the lights for just one hour? Actually they are not realising the importance of conserving energy and lowering the emission of carbon. If the present state of consumption of energy continues then the day is not far when there will be no electricity. Just think it in this way. What are you leaving fort your children and grand children? A future that is too dark to see, an environment too polluted to breath, a water source that is fully contaminated, a land that cannot grow edible vegetables and fruits, a vehicles that has no petrol to run on, etc. and etc.
Think about the current situation and its impact on the lifestyle of future generations. You can still wakeup and can control the situation to protect our environment by adopting some simple steps. The need is to be aware and act towards our environment.
1. Conserve energy
We all know very well what the importance of conserving energy is. We should use as much energy as required. Just switching off and unplugging the lights, electronic equipments, home appliances save much energy. Use energy efficient lightings like compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). While using washing machine do not dry clothes in the machine instead let them dry naturally in the sun as India is a country where sun shines almost every day. Use washing machine for full load not for few garments. It will save water.
2. Switch off
Just a simple habit of switching off all those items that work on electricity when not in use can do wonders but the thing is to make a habit. It can be your first step towards saving energy. Do not put any electronic item on standby position. The best way is to plug off them to ensure you are not wasting energy.
3. Use solar energy
We have plenty of sun in most of the part of year and sun is the biggest source of energy. We should use solar energy for heating water, lighting common area lights, cooking food (if possible), solar batteries, etc. instead of conventional sources of energy thus making the environment green. Homes should be built in such a fashion that in most part of the day we do not need to switch on the lights that is the design of homes should be such that maximum natural light can come inside.
4.Water conservation
Water is an integral part of our lives. We cannot imagine our life without clean water. Though we have a large portion of earth covered with water but still clean water crisis is there in most of the countries in the world. Why, because we cannot use the sea water for drinking. That is why we need to save water especially drinking water. Do not waste water at home, offices, schools, hospitals, public places, etc. Repair all taps if leaking or not working properly.
5. Refrain from using plastic
Plastic is the worst thing ever discovered in destroying the natural atmosphere. Plastic is the most convenient thing in our lives but also the most dangerous thing to use. They are not biodegradable and that is why main reason of pollution in water, land and air. Try to minimise the use of plastic bags and other plastic items when there is an alternative available.
6. Green technology
It is better to use eco friendly electronic appliances and device which assure minimum harm to our environment like star rated appliances, digital devices, etc. now reputed brand names are coming with eco friendly technologies as they use less energy than conventional products. Be informed and encourage production of such items.
7. Reduce Reuse Recycle
This is the best ever thing you can do for your children. Adopt this mantra by heart then educate your kids and those who are unaware of it. By following this mantra you can definitely improve the quality of lives of coming generation. Do not make unnecessary calls from mobile, do not forward unnecessary e-mails, reduce talking time on phone to save energy of yours as well as environment.
