Sabarmati Ashram – National Monument in Ahemdabad

Ahmedabad is one of the most significant cities of Gujarat state. If you are visiting Ahmedabad then it is impossible to miss the Sabarmati Ashram which is also called Harijan Ashram, Satyagraha Ashram and Gandhi Ashram. This Ashram was built on 17th June 1917 and the architect of this Ashram was Charles Correa. The location of this Ashram is at the bank of Sabarmati River just four miles away from the town hall in the Sabarmati suburb. This Ashram is significant place because Mahatma Gandhi lived here for over twelve years. This place witnessed many historical events during the freedom fight of India and that is why it is now a National Monument for Indians. The Dandi March Movement was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi from this place in the year 1930.The current Ashram was shifted from Kocharab Bungalow owned by Jivanlal Desai. It was the place where the Ashram was first founded on 25th May 1915 when Gandhiji returned from South Africa but shifted to Sabarmati Bank on June 17th 1917on an open land of about 36 acres. The primary aim to create this Ashram was to form a group of workers totally nonviolent who could find workers just like them to participate in a nonviolent fight against British to get independence. Gandhiji’s efforts had shown results and a community of nonviolent people were created who lived their lives in search of truth and nonviolence and contributed in freedom fight.The Ashram houses a museum known as Gandhi Sangrahalayawhich was started at the HridayKunj but later shifted to a brand new furnished building. This new museum building was designed by Charles Correa and inaugurated on May 10th 1963 by the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru.  There are various parts of Ashram named like Nandini, VinobaKutir, Mira Kutir, UpasanaMandir, etc. Nandiniwas the name of a guest house situated near HridayKunj. It was the place where Guests from India and Abroad resided. VinobaKutir was called so because AcharyaVinobaBhave resided here for some time, Mira kutir named after the disciple of GandhijiMiraben who was the daughter of British Admiral. The UpasanaMandir was one of the favorite places of Mahatma Gandhi as it is an open space located between HridayKunj and MaganKutir. Here prayers were offered and Gandhi ji answered questions of people. The residents of Ashram used to enjoy bhajans here and read holy books Geeta, Bible and Quran here.Around seven lakh tourists visit Sabarmati Ashram every year to see the museum displaying letters from Gandhi, pictures, films, Charkha and other items. The walk tours can be arranged for visitors. It takes around 90 minutes.
