While talking about the places of interest in the coastal city of Mumbai Victoria Gardens cannot be missed. The official name of the Victoria Gardens currently is Veermata Rani Jijabai Bhonsle Udyaan. It is named after the mother of great Maratha king Shivaji. It is located at Byculla area in the heart of Mumbai city in Maharashtra. The land on which the current Jijamata Udyaan is situated was initially owned by the wealthy Jewish businessman named David Sassoon who instructed architects to create the museums and clock tower at this place but late he donated this place to Mumbai Municipal Corporation.Though it is called a Garden but actually it also houses a zoo, Victoria and Albert Museum. It was founded in the year 1861. In short this place is called Rani Bagh. The museums situated here exhibits the rich past of industrial as well as agricultural growth in Mumbai. There is a huge elephant statue is placed on the grounds at the eastern side of Museum. This huge elephant image was brought in here from the ancient Elephanta Caves of Mumbai city.At the entrance of the Jijamata Udyaan a huge clock tower whose design resembles Italian Architectural style welcomes you. This garden is spread over an area of forty eight acres and is full of lush greenery which is a rare sight now in the metro city of Mumbai. Colorful flower beds and tall trees give you an opportunity to indulge in nature and breathe as much fresh air as you can.
