Pashan is a suburb which is surrounded by Baner from North, Susgaon from West, Bavdhan from South and Pune University from East side. It is a residential area having many government establishments that has made the area less crowded and green. The roads in Pashan are really good and without potholes. Both the sides of road are having green trees that make the environs beautiful and pleasant. It is an approach road to Mumbai Pune express way. The word Pashan is a Sanskrit word which means rock or stone. In Marathi also it means the same.Pashan has a very beautiful lake called Pashan Lake which is a manmade lake made from a small stream of Ram River (Ramnadi). This stream starts from Bavdhan then flows to Pashan, Sutarwadi, Baner, and Someshwarwadi to main Mula River. It was a source of water to Pashan village all through the year. The total area is approximately forty square kilometer. This lake gives a stunning look to Pashan area as it attracts thousands of migratory birds and thus it has become a bird watchers’ paradise. There is a 300 meter long footpath alongside the western part of Pashan Lake being built by Pune Municipal Corporation called nature trail to facilitate bird watchers and to enhance the beauty of the place. There are some bamboo plants are also planted to beautify the lake and a wall is built to protect the area. There can be many rare species of birds which migrate from other parts seen in this lake after monsoon. The Pashan lake is a mid way halt of their journey to southern states for these birds.Pashan area is also famous for it’s high and low hills. A biodiversity park is being proposed by the PMC in order to use the 200 hectare land that is owned by state government. This place is full of natural beauty but it is very important to restore nature in its original form as the deforestation on the hills badly affected the area and the silt formation contributed in reduction in the depth of lake. The lake water was polluted due to mixing of oil and petrol in sewage due to washing of trucks in this area. There is another cause of worsening of water of lake is the Ipomoea weed which restrict the growing of other plants in the water. Government is trying to improve the water quality but the cause needs to be treated than curing then only results in favor can be obtained. The source of pollution should be eliminated to save this lake.There is a very famous Balaji temple situated at the intersection point of Pashan – Sus Road and Baner – Pashan link Road.  It was built in the year 1998. There is one Lord Shiva temple near Ram River in Someshwarwadi constructed during the time of Shivaji Maharaj. A weekly vegetable market on Sundays pulls good crowd from nearby areas to buy a variety of vegetables at a reasonable price.If we talk about transportation then PMPML buses are the best transport facility in the area having good frequency and connectivity to important areas of city.There are various government establishments in the area like Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Explosive Research and Development Laboratory (ERDL), National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IISER), National Institute of Virology (NIV), High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), etc.These establishments have covered a huge space of land in the area but the advantage is that the green patch makes the area more inviting and less polluted due to lack of population. There is a big garden in the NCL area having a long zigzag jogging track that goes from the dense trees in the park. This park also has various kids’ equipments to attract kids. This park is meant for only NCL residents but other civilians can be seen quite often here.Ruchi Mahajan
