Ohel David Synagogue in Pune: An Architectural Marvel of its Time

But some of them have become the architectural marvel today because of their fine designing and construction styles. One such place is David Synagogue. The complete name of this building is The Ohel David Synagogue. It was created by late David Sassoon who also built the very prominent hospital of Pune city the Sassoon Hospital which is a major hospital and research centre today. The construction of this magnificent Synagogue started in the year 1863 while it took almost five years to complete. By the year 1867 it was ready to use. Built in the red bricks this synagogue gives red look and thus it is also called Red Synagogue or Lal Davel. Mr. David was a good human being and known for his various charitable works.This synagogue is specially built for the Jewish community in and around Pune to fulfill their religious and spiritual requirements. In the summer and rainy season this place attracts good number of Jewish visitors from Mumbai. David Sassoon lived in the same premises and thus his tomb is situated in the grounds of the Synagogue. You can also see a Mikvah in the synagogue but not in operation currently. David Sassoon was actually a treasurer of Bagdad from 1817 to 1829. Soon he became the leader of Jewish community in Mumbai when Bagdadi Jewish people came to Mumbai. He was a businessman by profession dealing in cotton and opium in china. Initially he worked as a middleman between British and gulf countries’merchants but later became rich businessman in India.The synagogue resembles the Victorian architectural style. It is currently under the management of Sir Jacob Sassoon Charity trust. The outer color of the synagogue is complete red and in the front you can see huge pillars in gothic style supporting the structure. There is a big clock tower at a good height looking at the city. Inside the synagogue a separate prayer hall is there with a gallery especially for ladies devotees reachable with a flight of stairs on the first floor. There is prayer services conducted every day in the synagogue. A hazzan from Mumbai comes to conduct services of Shabbath Prayers. Many tourists as well as locals visit this marvelous structure in Pune. This synagogue is located in Byculla where David lived with his family in a bungalow which used to be like a palace known as Shin Sangoo. The synagogue is currently given the status of a monument.Some other buildings built by David Sassoon and his family in Pune are Sassoon Hospital, Lady Rachel Sassoon Dispensary, Mechanics’institute, a library, Convalescent home and David Sassoon Vriddha Ashram.
