Nehru planetarium in Mumbai is one of the five planetariums established in India named after the first Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. The cities where the other four planetariums are established are New Delhi, Bangalore, Pune and Allahabad. The planetarium at Allahabad is called Jawahar Planetarium. The first planetarium founded in Asia was the Nehru Planetarium of Pune. It was established in the year 1954. The Nehru Planetarium at Mumbai is a part of Nehru Centre and was established and inaugurated on 3rd March 1977 by Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister but the Nehru Centre came into existence in the year 1972 as a monument of faith of Jawaharlal Nehru’s vision in mankind, humanity and his willingness to uplift the human beings to the greatest height. The Nehru Centre has become a prominent place for study of astronomy and space science.The building of the Nehru Planetarium has a huge dome which can be seen from a distance. It is located at Worli area in Mumbai. The famous architect of that time J. M. Kadri had designed this spectacular building. Designed in 1977 this building of the centre later became quite popular among the students of Astronomy, space aspirants as well as curious kids and youngsters of city. Students as well as scientists of Astronomy come here at the planetarium for logical study of space Science.The planetarium also serves as a venue for the discussion sessions, lectures based on astronomical as well as cosmological events. For example Science Quiz Contest, Astro painting, Astro Poetry, Science elocution, etc. are some of the programmes held here. The planetarium houses the concert as well as movie auditorium both where shows are conducted daily. Till now since its inception total thirty one astronomical presentations were held here.The planetarium houses the following:

The main attraction at the centre is the variety of cubicles that calculate your weight on each of nine planets of our solar system. There is a science complex close to the cubicle section exhibiting fourteen minute exhibit. It is known as the Discovery of India which includes the artistic, philosophical as well as academic journey of India through the ages. This section has fourteen galleries displaying architectural work, artistic examples, various photographs as well as audio visuals.The exhibits also include steam engine, tramcar, railway engine, supersonic jet, etc. students are the main visitors at this interesting section of planetarium. The planetarium is now quite advanced having a Digistar 3 planetarium projector installed in 2003 as before that Carl Zeiss Universal Projector was there. At the basement of the planetarium various international fairs and local exhibitions held. This place also becomes the venue for classical music and dance concerts, plays and dramas. The auditorium is marble paneled and has special acoustic effects for maximum entertainment. The auditorium has a capacity to accommodate 1000 people at one time.There are special arrangements for visitors to watch study as well as photograph the eclipse and other astronomical events of universe. There are telegraphs placed outside the planetarium to watch the phenomenon of universe. It is a fascinating place for students, astronomers, kids and visitors who are interested to find out more about the amazing and mysterious universe, the solar activities and the cosmic world. A theatre programme known as Awesome Universe is organised by the Nehru Planetarium.
