National Defence Academy – The Pride of Pune

Pune is a proud city of Maharashtra state as it has not only one reason to be the best but there are many feathers of achievement contributes to the position. The pride of Pune NDA is an academy for defence education and training. NDA stands for National Defence Academy which is located in Pune for years now and the proud fact is that NDA is the only Academy in the entire world to train the three forces i.e. Army, Naval and Air Force together. It is not only training the three forces together but it is ranked as the best Academy in the world to train armed forces. Isn’t it something we should be proud of?Date of commencementThe National Defence Academy started on 7th December 1954 with a Motto of “Service Before Self”. In Hindi translate it like “Seva Parmo Dharm”. This academy is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University.LocationThe NDA academy is situated seventeen kilometres from Pune in Khadagwasala. The campus is quite huge but exceptionally beautiful and green gives appropriate atmosphere to its students.  The total area of the campus is 7015 acres that is 28.39 square kilometre.  This location is finalised after giving lots of thought to various factors like climatic conditions, water body, hilly mountains and uninterrupted vast land. In Pune all these things were available in quality and quantity that is why the current location was finalised for building the future of armed forces training centre.The InfrastructureThe NDA Academy campus has a Sudan Block and in front of the Sudan block the Ashok Stambh is standing. There is a library in the campus that is called Vyas Library which has a huge collection of periodicals, journals, printed books, electronic subscriptions, etc. in at least ten different languages from around the world. There are more than 100000 printed books you can find here. We can say it is a vast collection of learning stuff from around the world.The NDA academy is an excellent example of very well maintained facilities and infrastructure like• Spacious classrooms• Well equipped labs• 2 swimming pools (Olympic size)• Gymnasium• Football grounds (32)• Polo grounds• Cricket stadium• Squash courts• Tennis courtsThe academics and trainingNDA is a graduation academy where students (cadets) come after clearing 10+2 examination. There are various entrance tests conducted for admission to NDA. The graduation is of three years and each year has two terms. First term starts from January to May called Spring Term and the second term starts from July to December called Autumn Term.  Thus one cadet will clear six training terms to pass out from NDA. After being trained hard in a totally disciplined environment for three years one student is moulded to become a strong defence cadet to join their further training institutes in respective fields (army, navy or air force).Visiting DaysIt is a restricted area and visitors allowed only on Sundays. Though you need to have prior permission to visit and if you are visiting in a group then a guided tour can be arranged.
