National Centre for Performing Arts

National-CentreWhile exploring the island city of Mumbai you should not miss the National Centre for the Performing Arts which in short known as NCPA. You may not know but it is true that NCPA is our country’s best Performance Art Institute. Here you can witness the best of theatre, music, film and dance performances. It is located at NCPA Marg on Dorabji Tata Road at Nariman Point in Mumbai in the state of Maharashtra. The construction of the centre started in the year 1981, it completed in 1985. The centre opened in the year 1986. The height of the building is 46.28 metres and it was built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd.This centre is created using the grant of Rs. 4 Million from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Later on corporate sector funding helped the centre to flourish. Though the current NCPA started in the year 1986 but originally it was registered as a society much earlier on 8th June 1966 with an aim to serve the generations with performing and allied arts. In its temporary accommodation at 89, Bhulabhai Desai Road, the NCPA was inaugurated by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 29th December 1969. At that time it had a small auditorium, listening rooms and practice facility but currently the new structure is standing on an expanse of eight acres of reclaimed land at Nariman Point, one of the most expensive locations of Mumbai.National Centre for Performing Arts was established with the objective to preserve and promote classical, traditional as well as contemporary performing and visual arts. To fulfil this objective the centre is working hard to spread knowledge, provide training and sponsor as well as undertake scientific research in the field of performing arts. You may not know that the NCPA centre is also home of Symphony Orchestra of India. There is a library at the centre with the rich collection of more than 20000 books on arts, films, theatre and culture. Apart from these the centre also houses a collection of 5000 audio recordings of Indian classical, Hindustani music, Carnatic music in the audio section of library. This place is like a paradise for performing art experts and aspirants.The NCPA houses three main theatres which are:

  • Jamshed Bhabha Theatre with seating capacity of 1109 at a time
  • Tata theatre with seating capacity of 1010
  • Experimental theatre with 300 seats

Apart from these there are many other facilities at the centre. Art students, professionals and art enthusiasts can opt for the membership of Performing Arts Circle (PAC). On an average about 40 to 50 events are organised at the centre in a month and most of them are free for PAC members. The members of PAC also have the advantage to use the advanced & well equipped reading as well as listening library at the NCPA. NCPA has the credit to organise several performances in a year with top performers of industry like Vilayat Khan, M. S.
