Mussoorie-Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) was established with an objective of planning and developing the city of Dehradun. Dehradun city is the most fertile city in the Doon valley of the shivalik ranges and has been the most developed city in the region. The city has undergone a massive development in the earlier days after independence, with the view of managing the development of the city and its adjacent areas the MDDA came into existence in 1984. The city was undergoing a number of problems including haphazard development and uncontrolled management. MDDA has been working on the development and management of the Dehradun and Mussoorie along with their adjacent areas.MDDA ObjectivesThe idea behind the formation of MDDA was to reform the development of the Dehradun city which was growing in a very haphazard manner. The main objective of the MDDA is to check the degradation of natural environment and to sustain the glory of the city. The formation of MDDA was done under the provisions of U.P. Urban Planning and Development Act 1973. MDDA is now a local decision making authority which is totally self sufficient which can undertake all sorts of activities for the well planned urban development of the city and its adjacent areas.MDDA is dedicated to maintaining and managing the development of Dehradun and Mussoorie cities. MDDA focuses on the development of various infrastructure facilities which needs to be inexpensive, functionally utilitarian and more importantly environment friendly development. MDDA undertakes various reforms to make the city development high in the quality. Main objectives of MDDA to manage and built a better city are as follows
- Implementation of the master plan for the city.
- Land acquisition to implement various development schemes in the city.
- Proper enforcement of plans and development schemes.
- Implementation of various protecting measures to save the environment from abnormal city developments.
- Coordinating with Municipal Corporation and the Public Works Department for the urban development.
Vision and WorkIn current time, Dehradun is undergoing numerous problems like housing shortage and lack of urban infrastructure along with traffic issues and congestion problems. MDDA has taken up various short-term and long-term development and infrastructure plans considering the future requirements of the city. MDDA had revised Dehradun Master Plan-2001 in association with the Town Planning Department of Uttaranchal and new master plan–2025 was notified in 2009. The MDDA has taken several projects like Transport Nagar, Inter State Bus Terminal etc to reduce the traffic problems.MDDA has also amended building bylaws to protect the environment from the development in the city. Various safety measures are undertaken on a regular basis by the MDDA to protect the developments from natural disasters like earthquake and landslides. The Dehradun and Mussoorie come under the sensitive zone of India. Hence MDDA takes relevant steps to protect the region from mishaps.Projects by MDDA
