Murudeshwara In Karnataka – A Spiritual Experience

Let me tell you about one such place that can take your breath away. It is Murudeshwara which is located in Bhatkal Taluka of Uttara Kannada in the state of Karnataka. As the name suggests Murudeshwara is another name of famous Hindu God Lord Shiva. You will be surprised to know that the statue of lord Shiva here is the second tallest in the world. The huge magnificent statue is enough to blow you that to in the back drop of Arabian Sea as it is situated at the coast of Arabian Sea.  The other thing that made this place popular is the expansion of sandy beach that is a favourite of everyone. In short the Murudeshwara temple, the impressive Shiva statue and the captivating sandy beach are the main attraction of this place. The entire location is quite striking and perfect for spending pleasant time with family and friends. When we reach on top of the hill we can experience the magic spell of surroundings. By the evening the sun becomes more and more beautiful and within minutes sinks into the sea with all its glory. It is an amazing place to live some of the memorable moments of your life. Either you can enjoy the slow wind under the coconut tree or can have a dip into the sea waves that always seem inviting.If the legend to be believed it is said that this place has connections with Ramayana. Ravana had thrown pieces and cloth covering of Atma Linga that he got from Lord Shiva after pleasing him by prayers and worship at different places. The cloth was thrown to Mrideshwara which is now known as Murudeshwara in Kanduka hill. Ravana wanted to attain immortality by worshipping Atma Linga (Dvine Linga) but he couldn’t do that because of interference from various powers of God who feared of misuse of powers by Ravana.The impressive Murudeshwar temple has a Gopura of twenty storeys. The Kanduka Hill on which the temple is created is encircled by Arabian Sea from three sides making it a picturesque location. At the entrance of the temple two life sized elephants as guards welcome you. These elephants are built in concrete. The Gopura which is called Raja Gopura is 237.5 feet high. It is one of the tallest Gopura in South India created by R. N. Shetty, a businessman and Philanthropist. Murudeshwara or Shri Mridesa Linga is the main deity of the temple. The entire temple is modernised but the sanctum is still in its original form. Nobody can enter the sanctum.  A rough rock is used to create the Lingam which is situated in a hollowed spot in the ground. Several oil lamps illuminate the lingam. The statue of Lord Shiva which took almost two years to create has a height of approximately 15 meters. The total cost of creating it was fifty million rupees.  Initially the statue was painted in golden colour and had four arms but the rains changed the colour and one arm blew away by strong winds.The statue is not very old but the temple is said to be more than five hundred years old. There is a large fort near the temple and it is said that this fort belonged to Tipu Sultan who was the renowned ruler of Mysore. He renovated this fort during his ruling period.When to visit Murudeshwara?The best time to visit Murudeshwar is between October and March as the weather is pleasant during this time of year.  During winters the temperature is between 10oc to 32oc while in summers it is 22oc to 40oc.How to reach?There are no direct trains to Murudeshwara from Bangaluru so one needs to reach to nearest towns like Karwar, Bhatkal, Honnavar, Gokarna, Karwar and then can take buses from there. There are regular bus services available from here. the location of Murudeshwar is on NH-17 between Honnavar and Bhatkal.
