The place where the current racecourse is located was once a marshy land which was called Mahalaxmi Flats. It was established in the year 1883 and created in the same line as the Caulfield Racecourse of Melbourne in Australia. Sir Cusrow N Wadia donated the land on which the current racecourse is located to the people of Mumbai.Presently the place is on lease given to the Royal Western India Turf Club which manages the Racecourse by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai. The huge Mahalaxmi Racecourse also houses spacious lawns which are used for wedding celebrations, parties, special occasions, etc. these lawns have a capacity to accommodate around 1500 to 2000 people at a time. Apart from lawns and the racing track the racecourse also adorns ancient structures that enhance the beauty of the place. These royal style structures date back to 1880’s. Among these the Grandstand is quite a significant heritage monument. Government authorities are doing their best to prevent and conserve these architectural historic monuments. The racecourse also houses a helipad that can be used by civilians of Mumbai.From mid November to the last week of April the horse racing events are organised in here. The first Sunday of February every year is an important date because on this day the famous Derby event is conducted here. This Derby event is sponsored by McDowell’s Co. Ltd owned by Vijay Malya in the name of The McDowell’s Indian Derby. These horse races are attended by the posh community, celebrities, business tycoons, actors and high income groups of Mumbai city.The major races held here are:
