Kolkata is a city of diverse religions or you can say it is a melting point of different cultures. People came here from different parts of world to find trading opportunities and got settled in here. One such community that came here more than two centuries back and left its footprints in the form of some notable monuments is Jews. I am talking about the Jewish community whose trades flourished in the city and thus they decided to build their religious shrines in the city for their community. Synagogue is one such place that is a Jewish religious place located at the junction of Brabourne Road and Canning Street close to Bara Bazaar in Kolkata. Once having a strong hold of population of about six thousand in the city now is shrunk to only thirty. This has happened when Israel was formed in the year 1948. There were five Synagogue were built by Jews during their stay in Kolkata out of which only two currently stands and are declared as protected monuments by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The first one is Magen Synagogue and the other one is Beth EI Synagogue. Synagogue is a place of worship for Jewish community. The Megen Synagogue is built by Mr. Elias David Joseph Ezra in the memory of his beloved father Mr. David Joseph Ezra. He died in the year 1882 and after that his son started building this synagogue for him. You may be surprised to know that this is the largest worshiping place of Jews in the East. At the same place where the current synagogue is standing today once a Jewish Temple which was called Nevch Salome existed. The construction work completed on 11th September 1884 and after that it was opened to public for worshipping. The interiors of the place are extremely outstanding having Italian renaissance style of architecture. The length of the synagogue is 140 feet while it is 82 feet in width. The spire height is also 140 feet. From the high tower of the synagogue you can enjoy the spectacular view of Kolkata city. there is a huge clock fitted in the tower and this design became popular in the later period. There are separate arrangements for ladies and gents who come here to worship. By taking a flight of stairs which are on both the sides one can reach the gallery. This gallery is reserved for women specially. The outer finish of the structure is in red brick with an entrance of arched door with hexagonal star of David and Hebrew inscription. On the walls of the synagogue you can see various memorial plaques dedicated to Jews of Kolkata. Currently there are no services at this place but still it is very well maintained from inside while outside wall is hidden due to the various mobile stalls selling artificial jewellery and such other items. When you enter the place you can see the neat and clean ambience of the synagogue. There are chequered marble flooring, pillars are carved in floral patterns and you may feel surprised that these floral pillars were brought in all the way from Paris. There are huge chandeliers hanging from the roof while the stained glass windows still filtering sunrays inside the premises. There is an altar crowned with an Apse and studded with stars seen at the centre. Here you can find several Hebrew Inscriptions and other items belonging to Jewish Iconography. Just opposite the altar the circular coloured stained glass is enhancing the beauty of the place. There is a podium in the middle of the hall used to preach Rabbi. The interiors of the synagogue are really impressive and still well kept in spite of a long period of time. if you want to explore this magnificent structure of last remaining Jews of Kolkata you are required to take the Permission of Mr. David Nahoum who is the last Jews of Kolkata and runs the famous confectionary at the new Market in Kolkata. займ на карту без отказов круглосуточновзять кредит онлайн
