Lal Bagh Botanical Garden – Bengaluru’s Pride

Bangaluru is a city of gardens and that too very well maintained. Situated at the southern side of city Lal Bagh is one of the most beautiful gardens in the country. Lal bagh which means Red Garden in English is popular for being the best Botanical garden in Bangaluru.  The credit for initiating such a beautiful place on an area of around 40 acres goes to Hyder Ali who was the ruler of Mysore during eighteenth century while his son the great Tipu Sultan not only continued the legacy but also added new chapters to it. He finished the garden and gradually improved the quality and added varieties of flora to the garden by importing rare plant species from around the world. The gardens in Sira inspired Hyder Ali to create Lal Bagh . The Sira garden which is 120 kilometers from Bangaluru, were done by Last Mughal Subedar Dilavar Khan during his ruling period between 1726 and 1756.  Gradually the garden was expanded in different directions and today it is spread over sprawling 240 acres of land in Southern Bangaluru.The Lal Bagh is huge garden which attracts thousands of visitors every year from different parts of country and outside. Prince Albert Victor laid the foundation stone of the glass house on November 30th in the year 1898. The credit to create this glass house goes to James Cameron who was the Superintendent of Lal Bagh at that time. Annual flower shows are organized in the Glass House. These flower shows are usually arranged twice a year, once on 26th January on the occasion of Republic Day and other on Independence Day on 15th August. The glass house looks magnificent in the night when lights are on.More than 1873 species of flora are found here in the botanical garden. Apart from this collection of plants you can also enjoy the trees which are more than hundred years old. These trees are labeled for with age and name for visitors’ information. The rare species of plants are imported from different countries of the world like Persia, Afghanistan, France, Cap Town, Mauritius, Turkey and other countries. These rare species were brought here and then multiplied. For bird watching one can go to the lake beyond the rose garden where you can sight Kingfisher, Purple Moorhen, storks, Dab chicks, cattle egrets, etc.There are four towers surrounding the garden built at the hillocks in 1597. One of these towers was erected by Kempe Gowda II who was the founder of the city.  It is one of the major attractions in the garden. Various flower shows are the best way to teach people about conservation and cultivation of plants. The garden is full of varieties and has an excellent landscaping with various colorful flower beds, open lawns, lotus ponds as well as fountains. A proper watering system helps to maintain garden properly.  The oldest rock formation is kept here and it ages approximately 3000 million years that is amazing. No doubt this rock is a crowd puller.  Every second and fourth weekends there is a colorful folk fair being organized by Karnataka Government.
