Khadakwasla dam is the primary source of water for Pune city. This dam is located nearly 20 km far from Pune City in Maharashtra. The dam of Khadakwasla was initially erected in 1879 as a stonework gravity dam. During that time, Khadakwasla dam was the first of its kind in the whole world. In the neighboring areas of this dam, the National Defense Academy (NDA) and Central water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) are located. There are also many farm houses and bungalows situated in the beautiful and astonishing surroundings of Khadakwasla dam. The people owning these bungalows and farm houses take pleasure in the remarkable sight and the astounding climate of this quiet and mostly secluded area.Ahead of Khadakwasla dam, the well-known Sinhagad Fort and the Panshet and Varasgoan twin dams are located. The Khadakwasla Dam had to be destroyed in the year 1961, due the overflow of water in Panshet dam. This caused devastating and shocking floods in Pune. But Khadakwasla dam was later on reconstructed.The surrounding area of Khadakwasla Dam has become a very famous and well-liked picnic place not only amongst people of Pune, but also amongst all the Mahrashtrians. Various people come to Khadakwasla dam on weekends, during the monsoon and winter for picnic. The most beautiful and picturesque places around the dam are Peacock Bay, Kudje village, and Neelkanteshwar, situated near Bahuli village ahead of Kudje.Peacock Bay is a different location near Khadakwasla Lake. This place is filled with natural beauty. This has made this bay one of the most popular locations in Pune. Peacock bay is a property of National Defense Academy. For those who are wondering why they call this place Peacock Bay; the name was given to this bay because you can find many Peacocks in this area. There are also other animals such as Deer, lion, monkeys and civet. This part of Khadakwasla Lake is about 500 sq km vast. One of the major attractions of this lake is the water sports activities and competitions such as yearly National Inland Championship or open lake swimming that takes place here.The road that goes to Sinhagad Fort is very close to this place. This road has become one of the major picnic spots in all of Pune as it offers picturesque views and a pleasant weather. There are many buses that can take to Sinhagad Fort. These buses can also drop you at the Khadakwasla dam. But if you are not interested in going with buses you can always hire a taxi.
