Katraj Snake Park – Paradise For Children and Reptile Lovers

There are very few places in the city that are purely for kids’ enjoyment. Katraj Snake Park is one of them. This park is in Katraj on the Pune Satara Highway close to Bhartiya Vidyapeeth University. It is just eight kilometres away from main city.  It is the perfect place for a day outing with kids with education and enjoyment together. This is one of its kind parks as it is a home of various types of reptiles specially snakes. If you are really afraid of snakes or creepy animals then it is recommended that you keep yourself away from this place because the speciality of this park is snakes.This park was started in the year 1986 with the kind efforts of Mr. Neelam Kumar Khaire who himself is a snake lover along with the cooperation of PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation). Actually there are more than 160 species of snakes one can find with different shape and size. You may first feel frightening but it is a place that is meant to educate people for better treatment towards this reptile. You can find here rare species of Brown Palm Civet which is the only specimen in captivity according to the wildlife records. One six years old nine feet long king Cobra that can take your breath away at the first sight is also a major attraction here. it was brought here from Sundarban. Apart from these reptiles you can also see turtles and birds.In the year 1999 this park became Rajiv Gandhi Udyan. A zoo for wild animals is also added later on to make it a complete animal reservoir. This zoo is very specious as the cages are quite apart from each other. Though you may need to struggle to cover the complete zoo and park but it is still worth. It is actually in favour of animals who do not like to stand in the midst of crowd that makes unnecessary noise.  Kids never get tired and full of enthusiasm to see which animal they will find in the next cage.On the auspicious occasion of Naagpanchami there a variety of programmes being organised in the Snake Park in order to teach people not to ill treat this dreaded species which is an important part of this world. They also educate through various mediums about what are the myths related to snakes and give the right information to prevent killing of reptiles. It is really impressive.  There is a small library in the park that gives all information about the different type of species of reptiles. This place is known to be a conservation place for reptiles and has worked in preserving wildlife. One interesting fact here is that the information here displayed is also written in Braille language to make it possible to read for blinds too. It is really nice effort to make people aware of the reptiles.The huge garden is full of green trees and seems inviting. The lake in park is a major attraction among visitors who like to have a boat ride here. The park authorities charge almost nil as entrance fee. I do not understand why? I guess they can charge a bit more and can utilise that amount in betterment of the place.
