Mumbai has the impressive background of education and entertainment. It has been a national hub for entertainment sector and it also provides brilliant options for the education. Mumbai University is one of the top Indian universities. There are many foreign students learning various courses in the university along with other students. Mumbai University and ASK Foundation are building the largest convention centre in Mumbai. The convention centre will be located on the brown field near Mumbai International Airport and it will also include the 2.5 hectare land within the current Mumbai University. Mumbai University and ASK Foundation convention centre will be the Multi use development.The center of the ICC will be built as a huge convention hall which can be used for big conferences, concerts, performances and shows with capacity of 4200 seats. This 50,000 sq ft hall will also cater for exhibitions, ballroom style banquets and sports facilities. The upper level of the hall will house meeting rooms, offices and function rooms. The convention centre will also provide facilities of food and beverages with the availability of restaurants.The ASK group had initially donated Rs. 30 crores for building the International Convention Centre (ICC) to Mumbai University. Later the cost of the centre escalated to 200 crores, though ASK group agreed to bring more funds for creating the infrastructure.Highlights of the Convention centre:The structure of the building is designed by Cybertecture- globally known firm established by renowned architecture James Law. James Law is famous for his unusual designs and excellent use of technology. The cybertecture of James law is winner of the international selection competition for design of this convention centre. James law has designed many projects in Mumbai such as Indra Towers- Water Droplet project and Cybertecture Egg building. The Convention centre is an iconic circular design developed by a diagrid structure. The main hall of the superstructure is built in such a way that there will be no column which will steal the central/stage view. The circular roof will provide sufficient amount of natural light and ventilation. The convention centre will also house elements like solar panels, water recycling etc.The international convention structure will be the gateway for international culture and activities. Mumbai is a commercial capital of India. Yet it never had any big convention centres which can house around 5000 people at a time; hence the big organizations from Mumbai are forced to go to Delhi and Hyderabad. Hyderabad has the biggest convention centre in India. With the Mumbai Universities International convention centre problem of moving to other cities for big conventions will be lowered. The Convention Centre is proposed to be completed by the year 2015.
