Kolkata is a city of rich history and cultural values and thus it is not possible for a city like that not to have a grand museum like the Indian Museum that is one of the oldest museums of Asia and ninth oldest museum in the world. The museum displays beautifully the evolution of humans and the rich culture and history of Indians. The Indian Museum of Kolkata is located at Chowringhee on Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Kolkata in the state of West Bengal. The museum is popularly known as Jadughar. Almost two centuries old this spectacular museum was established in the year 1814. It was created in the Asiatic Society Building by a Botanist from Denmark known as Dr. Nathaniel Wallich but in the year 1875 the museum was moved to a new place designed in Italian architectural style by Walter B Grawille. It is said that it is the largest and the best museum in entire country. Isn’t it amazing to explore such a recognised museum of India? Public visiting of the museum started only in 1878 sixty our years after its inception. You can imagine how big the museum is by the fact that it has sixty galleries which are divided into six sections known as Art, Anthropology, Archaeology, Geology, Industry and Zoology. There are three floors in the building which houses the museum spreading on an area of 930 square metres. Currently the museum which is an autonomous institution receives funding from the Government of India.The various sections displays the following:
- Art Section
Miniature paintings, decorative art items from various Asian countries, textiles, Muslin & Jamdani from Dhaka, Baluchari textile from Murshidabad, Phulkari from Punjab, Persian Carpets, Bengal Kanthas, Ritual Robes, Wood Carvings, metal sculptures, manuscripts illustrations of western and eastern India, Nepalese & Tibetan temple banners, brass & bronze images from Burmese gallery, silverware and several such other items.
- Anthropology section
Various objects of tribal and non tribal people, rare musical instruments, large Dioramas, etc.
- Archaeological section
Stone age artefacts, pre historic antiques belonging to Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa civilization (2500 B. C. – 1500 B.C.), Historic sculptures, inscriptions on stone and copper, collection of Indian coins, Orissan Art, 4000 years old Egyptian Mummy, paintings, Buddhist Stupa with carvings depicting Buddha’s life excavated from Bharhut in Madhya Pradesh, urn containing Ashes of Buddha, etc.
- Geological section
More than 80000 specimen divided in four galleries displaying precious stones, ornamental building stones, rocks, minerals, fossils, several meteorites, etc.
- Zoological section
Rich collection of specimen of insects, fish, reptiles, mammals, birds, etc.
- Industrial section
Innumerable botanical specimen covering medicines, forestry, agriculture, cottage industry, etc.It is a huge place to explore and thus takes almost a day to check out each section.
