Howrah Bridge-An Engineering Masterpiece and an Iconic Landmark of Kolkata

This spectacular bridge is a marvellous example of human experties in the field of engineering. It has become a remarkable success for seventy years for the city. The official name of this bridge is Rabindra Setu kept after the first Nobel prize winner in the field of literature in India and Asia Shri Rabindra Nath Tagore but locals call it Howrah Bridge as it connects two twin cities Kolkata and Howrah. It has got its official name on 14th June 1965. You may be surprised to know that this bridge is the busiest cantilever bridge in entire world. More than 100,000 vehicles and an average 1,50,000 pedestrians pass through this bridge everyday. Now you can imagine how much traffic it bears on a daily basis. Though this bridge is compared to that of Sydney Harbor Bridge but that bridge never seen such a traffic in years. The beauty of this bridge has become a recognition for the city of Kolkata. If you really want o explore this bridge then do it from a boat on the Hooghly River as from the middle of the river you can actually see its original magnificence.The construction work of the bridge started in the year 1936 after more than fifty years planning and hard work. It became ready in the year 1942 and on 3rd February 1943 it was opened for public use. Today even after seventy years of its inception day it is doing a great job of passing tonnes of load in the form of traffic every day. Unlike other bridges in India this bridge is toll free from both sides. Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company constructed this bridge. Its design is based on suspension type balanced cantilever and truss arch. It is completely made up of steel with a length of 705 metres, width of 21.6 metres with two footpaths on both the sides of 4.6 metres and a height of 82 metres. The Howrah Bridge is designed by Rendel, Palmer and Tritton together. It took approximately Rs. 333 crore to create this huge bridge using 26500 tons of steel. The bridge is built on the Hooghly River and is being maintained by Kolkata Port Trust. There are four bridges on the river and this one is one of them. The other three bridges are the Vidyasagar Setu, the Vivekananda Setu and recently built Nivedita Setu. You may not know that it was the third longest bridge in the world at the time of its inception and currently it is the sixth longest cantilever bridge in the world.The actual beauty of the bridge comes to life in the night when the bridge is illuminated completely.
