The rainy season brings lots of diseases like dengue, malaria, viral fever, Chikunguniya and many other such mosquito born diseases.  It is really important to take preventive measures inside as well outside the home to escape from these sicknesses which can take a considerable time to get cured. As we all know that number of mosquitoes multiplies during rainy season as they find many breeding spaces around our homes this time of year and the humid weather gives them the perfect atmosphere. It is important to control the breeding of mosquitoes in order to prevent invitation to most of the diseases. Here are some important tips that may help you and your loved ones to stay healthy in rainy season.

  • Cleanliness is a good habit. Keep your house clean. Wash your hands and feet after coming home from outside in rainy season.
  • If you find any water standing in or around your house, remove that immediately. Check your roof and balconies where there are chances of water clogging. Stagnant water is the site where mosquitoes lay eggs.
  • Clear any obstruction in pipelines carrying water from roof or from any other area before rains to avoid stagnant water like twigs, trash or leaves.
  • Cover up water tanks inside your home and on the roofs to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Fill the potholes in your neighborhood to avoid rain water standing.
  • If you have a swimming pool in your home or in your society then keep it chlorinated and if possible cover it up in rainy season. For small decorative pools you can use mosquito eating fishes to avoid mosquito breeding.
  • If you have bird baths in your home then it is important to change the water frequently and keep it clean. Even the pet feeding utensils should also be cleaned daily to prevent mosquitoes.
  • Cover all the food items in your house to avoid mosquitoes as well as flies.
  • Mosquitoes usually come in the home from outside. Thus it is important to check the surroundings for stagnant water. It can be your plants that have wet soil or the water can be stored in the plant trays which are kept below the plants to collect excess water. Check these trays and clean them up.
  •  Close all the windows and doors in the evening between 6 to 7 pm as this the time when mosquitoes usually enter the home. Open the windows in the morning for one to two hours to let the bugs out every day.
  • It is a good idea to put all the buckets, tubs, mugs or used containers upside down. Kids wading pools, old tires, used containers and other junks must be cleared from your garden or open spaces in your home where rain water can stay.
  • Citronella scented candles are good mosquito repellent thus using them is a good idea.
  • Instead of using mosquito repellent chemical liquids or tikkis it is better to use mosquito nets while sleeping as they are harmless for kids, young and elders and chemical exposure can be avoided.
  • Repair your window’s mosquito mash if there are holes or breakages in it. If there is space at the bottom of the door then use door sweep to pack the entrance for bugs. Close all the gaps to prevent bugs entry in your house.
  • Eliminate all the sites in and around your home where water can sit. Educating others can also help a lot to keep your surroundings mosquito free.
  • Marigold’s smell repels the mosquitoes. Thus it is a good idea to plant some marigold in your balconies, window sills or outside the main door. It works as a natural repellent.
  • Spray of Neem oil works as a mosquito repellent. You can use it on the probable entrances of mosquitoes.
  • While coming from outside make sure you and items you are carrying do not have any mosquitoes. Clear them away then enter the house.
