Haji Ali Dargah – A Holy Symbol of Faith

Haji-Ali-DargahOne of the most prominent Muslim religious places of Mumbai city Haji Ali Dargah is one. It is actually a Mosque and a tomb (dargah) magnificently placed in the middle of the sea on an islet and attached to the main land at the coast of Worli via a narrow pathway at the south of Mumbai city in Maharashtra. It is one of the most important tourists’ attractions of city and visited by many people irrespective of caste, religion and creed from city, country as well as outside the country. A perfect example of Indo Islamic architecture the Haji Ali Dargah houses the tomb of Sayed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari who was a rich Muslim merchant and later being known as saint resided in Mumbai but was actually from Bukhara in Ancient Persian Empire which is presently called Uzbekistan after travelling all over the world. The mosque was bilt in the fifteenth century in the year 1431in order to honour Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. Once he used to be a wealthy Muslim merchant who travelled places to places from early fifteenth century to mid fifteenth century.At last he chose Mumbai as his residing place. He gave up all his worldly possessions before going for a pilgrimage to Mecca which is famous Islamic pilgrimage. He turned into a saint. He directed his followers to cast his coffin carrying his body into Arabian Sea when he will die. While on his way to pilgrimage Mecca Haji Ali died and if the legend is believed his coffin floated back to the shores on its own and stuck in rocks at the islet near Worli. This is the same islet where later the Dargah was built in his memory. The other version of the story says that Haji Ali was drowned at the place where current mosque is constructed. Actually it has been more than five centuries to the event thus reliable sources of information are lacking. You may believe in any sort of story you like. The important fact is that this mosque and Dargah is created in honour of a Muslim saint named Haji Ali Shah Bukhari.This spectacular structure is built using white marble brought in from Makrana in Rajasthan. This is the same marble which was used to build Taj Mahal in Agra. There are two parts of Haji Ali Dargah. One is the mosque and the other is a tomb of Haji Ali. The architectural style used to create this monument is Indo Islamic inspired by Mughal architecture. Spread over an area of 4500 square metres this monument is about 85 feet in height. The main shrine is situated in a courtyard made of marble stone. The mosque is covered with red and green sheet that you can see first when you enter the Dargah. Other attractive features of the monument include intricately carved marble pillars, kaleidoscopic mirror work, beautiful minarets guarding the shrine, etc. due to its location at the centre of the sea the ancient structure is decaying at various places and needs frequent renovations due to high humidity and salty air. Attempts are going on to renovate the structure using Makrana marble by the Haji Ali trust with the help of Central Government.This significant monument is visited by 40000 devotees in a week on an average. On Fridays if you visit the place you may find various Sufi musicians performing devotional music here. Located just 500 metres from the coast the Dargah is also linked to the Mahalaxmi area by a narrow causeway. This causeway is approximately one kilometre long. This monument is a brilliant architectural example of ancient period representing Indo Islamic architecture. One can explore the monument and get the blessings of the saint Haji Ali. You can also explore the nearby attractions that include Crawford Market, Fashion Street, Mahim Bay, Mahalaxmi Racecourse Stadium and Bandra Worli Sea Link. In the event of high tide the approaching path way completely merges into water and leaves the monument isolated.
