‘The International and Universal Exposition of 1967’, famously known as Expo 67 is considered to be the most successful exhibition of the world in 20th century. As the motto of the fair was Man and his World, housing was the central theme of this expo. With outstanding design and implementation of three-dimensional prefabricated units for dwelling, Habitat 67 became the thematic structure of Expo67. The incredible project was conceptualized and designed by Israeli–Canadian architect, Moshe Safdie when he was just 23 years old. This young architect started with Habitat 67 as a thesis project for his architectural course and later, in spite of being inexperienced, Safdie got a golden chance to present his design in the prestigious Expo 67 which was held in Montreal, Canada. The housing complex initially was built as a pavilion for Expo 67. It was one of the major attractions of the recognized exhibition.Since its inception, Habitat 67 became an architectural milestone not only in Montreal but around the globe. It was a revolutionary residential project that transformed the concept of housing in Canada. The avant-garde housing project still hasn’t lost its appeal. It’s now been more than 40 years but still people all over the world visit Montreal to have a glance of this architectural marvel.
Concept and design of Habitat 67:This experimental project has redefined urban living in Montreal. Habitat 67 was specially designed to integrate the diversified features and benefits of modern homes with economics and density of contemporary urban residences. The intention of the designer was to provide affordable housing with modern elements. 354 construction modules of grey-beige color are connected with each other to form 158 dwelling units. Some of the apartments are joined together to form larger units, hence there are now 146 units of different sizes. The magnificent construction cubes are the symbol of perfection. The box-shaped modules were constructed in a nearby factory and were lifted by cranes. They were arranged in three asymmetrical forms. There are 15 different types of housing units ranging from 600 sq ft with 1 bedroom to 1800 sq ft with 4 bedrooms. There are total 12 floors and sidewalk at each level for accessing the homes. There are total 6 elevators which stop at every fourth floor to access the pedestrian lane. The units are robustly connected with each other by post-tensioning and high-tension rods, cables and welding.
