Let me take you to one such magnificent Sikh Gurudwara that can bring out the spirituality in you. One of the most well recognized Sikh holy shrine Gurudwara Bangla Sahib is located almost at the heart of Delhi city in the Cannaught Place area in New Delhi. You must be wondering why it is called Bangla Sahib Gurudwara then let me help you as there is a reason behind that. The current place where the shrine is situated today was a bungalow or a haveli once. This bungalow belonged to Mirza Raja Jai Singh who used to be an important military leader of Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor. The bungalow had another name as Jaisinghpura Palace before it was converted into a Sikh holy place. The Bungalow was built in the year 1664 then in the year 1783 it was again reconstructed as a small temple of Sikhs by Sardar Bhagel Singh but the actual appearance of today’s Gurudwara is the result of construction after the independence of India in 1947. Sardar Bhagel Singh was a Sikh General who also looked after nine more shrines in Delhi in the same year. At that time Shah Alam II was the emperor in Delhi. The Sikh architectural style is clearly visible in the Gurudwara of Bangla Sahib. This house of Worship of Sikh community is associated with Guru Har Krishan who was the eighth guru of Sikhs. In the year 1664 he lived here and helped the victims of Smallpox and Cholera epidemic by giving them fresh water and food but soon he contracted the disease and died in the same year on 30th March. The location of this holy shrine is very easy to find as the Cannaught Place is an important area of New Delhi. It is situated at the east of the intersection of two important roads named Ashok Road and Baba Kharag Singh Marg.The domes of this spectacular Gurudwara are painted in bright golden color that is visible from a distance as they are quite eye catching. There is a very beautiful pond inside the premises of Gurudwara. It is known as Sarovar and its water is considered by Sikhs very pure or holy. They call it Amrit and take some of it to their native place as they consider as the healing water. The reflection of shrine in the water of pond gives a panoramic sight to your eyes. In the night lights the Sikh temple looks stunning. The other easily seen feature of the structure is the tall flag pole which complements the look of the Gurudwara. This holy place is of great worship for Sikh community and the day of birth anniversary of their eighth Guru Har Krishan is special when thousands of devotees come here. The complex houses a beautiful temple, a kitchen, a holy water pond, a school, a library, a hospital, Baba Bhagel Singh Museum as well as an art gallery. Langars are the common kitchen where food is prepared and distributed among people irrespective of caste and religion. Gurusikhs prepare the food here but anyone can volunteer from food cooking to serving. The langar hall as well as the Gurudwara is now air conditioned for the comfort of visitors.
