Goa State Museum – Perfect Place to Explore Age Old History of Goa

The smallest state of India is Goa which is quite famous around the globe in spite of its small size for its beauty, rich flora and fauna, spectacular beaches, historical monuments, majestic churches and not to forget the pleasant atmosphere. It is an interesting place worth making a visit if you really want to enjoy old artifacts and historic collection displayed according to time scale.The collection of this museum was initially placed at the department of Archives and was managed by the Archeology and Museum unit.  Then on September 29th, 1977 a proper museum was opened in a rented place which was situated at St. Inez in Panaji and it was opened for public viewing. Currently the museum is shifted to a new building situated at the EDC Complex in Patto. This museum of Goa state was opened for public viewing on 18th June, 1996. The then President of India inaugurated the Goa State Museum.    The specialty of this museum lies in the fact that this place makes alive the centuries old history of Goa via the preserved arts, sculptures, history, culture and priceless antiques.Now it is time to know what you can look forward when you visit this museum. You will be pleased to know that it has a vast collection of at least eight thousand artifacts which includes Hindu as well as Jain artifacts as well as the sacred scriptures of these religions.  The display has the following interesting pieces:

When you enter the museum a very impressive carved figure welcomes you. In the sculpture gallery the figures are placed in such a fashion that you feel they are alive and roaming around as they are kept on small pillar shaped stands spread all over the room.  A very beautifully carved wooden chariot is quite an eye catching at the display. When you explore the Portuguese era furniture you find heavily carved tables and high backed chairs that remind us the story of brutal invasion and ruling of Portuguese in Goa for centuries. There is a big library in the museum to explore. The museum is currently divided into twelve different sections to display items in an organized way to general public separately.
