Working on the lines of making this world a serene place a global Pagoda is created in Mumbai.This place is known as the Global Vipassana Pagoda where Vipassana, the ancient meditation technique taught by Gautama Buddha, is practiced, taught and learned by thousands of people regularly. This Pagoda is located at Global Pagoda Road near Gorai at North West of Mumbai city in the state of Maharashtra. This international standard meditation centre is founded on 8th February 2009 by then President of India, Pratibha Patil.The land on a peninsula on which the Pagoda is built was donated and it is situated between Gorai Creek and the mighty Arabian Sea. The architectural style used to build the Pagoda is Burmese. The structure looks stunning in day and night. It is a symbol of peace and harmony and created in order to pay gratitude to Lord Buddha and his follower monks for dispensing and practicing the teachings to general public. The structure is also a symbol of gratitude to the country of Myanmar which has put immense efforts in order to preserve the ancient technique of Vipassana for today’s generation. The planning to create the wonderful meditation centre started early in the year 1997.The construction work started in the year 2000 and it took eight years to complete it. In November 2008 the structure was ready. Still some new additions are in progress. The Pagoda has a huge golden dome made of stone with self supporting interlocking stones. The architect who designed the Pagoda was Mr. Prvez Dumasia from Mumbai while consulting engineer was Mr. N. R. Verma from Sompura. The structure of this magnificent monument is designed in such a way that it can last for a thousand years. It is built using ancient Indian as well as modern technology of designing and construction. There is resemblance in the structure of the Pagoda to that of the Shwedagon Pagoda situated in Yangon at Myanmar.You may be surprised to know that this monument has the largest stone dome of the world created without any pillar support. This splendid dome is 29 metres tall while the entire structure is 96.12 metres in height. Until this monument was constructed the highest dome in the world was Gol Gumbaz dome situated in Bijapur in India.The dome of this Pagoda contains the original bone relics of Gautama Buddha enshrined in the central locking stone of the dome. These relics were found in Bhattiprolu of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, India. these relics were donated by Mahabodhi Society of India and the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to the Global Vipassana Pagoda. The internal part of pagoda is hollow. This pagoda is used as a huge meditation hall which can accommodate more than 8000 people at a time. The area it covers is approximately 6000 square metres. The pagoda at the south side consists of 108 small meditation cells for those students taking a course on meditation at the centre.The Global Vipassana Pagoda complex has the following sections:

  • Main Pagoda having bone relics of Buddha
  • Two small pagodas on North and south side
  • Library and study rooms for students

  • Circumambulation path around the dome
  • Underground parkade

This Vipassana meditation is now practiced in more than hundred countries of the world. It is believed that this ancient technique can wipe out the sufferings of human kind if everyone follows it. The teachings of Buddha do seem relevant to bring peace in the world. At this centre a ten day free Vipassana Meditation course is held in order to spread awareness about this miracle technique.
