Ghats of Kolkata

kolkata-ghatsKolkata is a city of joy, festivals and spiritually attached to Goddess Durga. The city is blessed by River Hooghly which makes the city more beautiful place than others. There are several Ghats on the River bank. These Ghats are the places where people can enter the river by the flight of few steps and around these Ghats it is quite common to find temples, restaurants, boats, clubs, etc. some of the popular Ghats of Kolkata are as follows:

  • Outram Ghat

As we all know that Kolkata city has seen British rule for a longer period than any other place and thus its culture, heritage structures as well as important places have an impact of British community in India. You might be wondering what sort of name is it. Actually this Ghat is named after a British General Sir Games Outram. This ghat is located at the south of another ghat known as Babughat. At the time of British rule this ghat section was quite significant because of its usability as this was the main mooring for various ships to nearby countries like Bangladesh and Burma.Whatever it was initially used for but today it is quite a happening place as you can see youngsters and seniors strolling here in the evenings and afternoons to beat the sweating summer of the region. The Explorers Club is another attraction here apart from a floating restaurant which attracts good number of customers. The club is an association for marine adventures. Just like other river banks here also you can enjoy the country boat rides on hire.

  •  Princep Ghat

This Ghat is quite old as it was created during the British Governance in the year 1843. This Ghat is a sort of memorial and dedicated to James Prinsep who was an Anglo Indian scholar.He was the secretary of the Asiatic Society from 1832 to 1838 and you may be surprised to know that he has dedicated most of his life to research on meteorology, chemistry, Indian scriptures, Archaeology, numismatics, mineral resources, etc. Among all these fields the most memorable and recognised work of him was the decoding the doctrines from the rocks and boulders of great king Ashoka.He also decoded the Brahmi script of Ashoka. He did not live longer to continue his research work further as he died at a tender age of just forty one years on 22nd April in the year 1840. After his death a fund is collected by the people of Kolkata to create the memorial to pay tribute to him. That is why it is known as Prinsep Ghat. The impressive Palladian covered entrance is designed by W. Fitzgerald. The location of the ghat is between the Water Gate and St. George’s Gate of Fort William. Greek and gothic styles are easily seen in the architecture of the ghat structure. You can see the memorial which is placed in a square with Ionian column supporting 40 feet roof.

  • Armenian Ghat

This is also quite an old ghat built in the year 1734 by an Armenian man known as Manvel Hazaar Maliyan and this is the reason this ghat has got its name Armenian Ghat. The same person also built the bell room as well as the tower of famous Armenian Church. Previously this ghat was used by Railway authorities as Kolkata Station and Ticket Reservation Room of Eastern Railways between 1854 and 1874. Currently this Ghat is under the control of Port Authority and used as a store house of the port commission.

  • Annapurna Ghat

The other name of this beautiful river bank was Raghu Mitra’s Ghat. Raghu Mitra’s father’s name was Govindo Ram Mitra and he was appointed by British as Black Deputee. Currently this Ghat is known as Annapurna Ghat because a man known as Bishnu Ram Chakraborty who was a hard devotee of Goddess Annapurna and an Ameen from Bag Bazaar built four temples of Lord Shiva at the Raghu Mitra’s Ghat in the year 1776.
