It is located at the water front of Arabian Sea at the tip of Apollo Bunder in Colaba district of South Mumbai. Though it is a prominent landmark of Mumbai city today but you may not be aware of the fact that it was built by British to represent the grandeur of their rule over Indians. After knowing the fact you may not feel that proud of the monument but let us see it as an architectural structure of India built completely with the funds of Government of India. Just leave the part who built it and why it was built.The construction of the structure started on 31st March in the year 1911 while it took fourteen years to complete and in the year 1924 it was ready with a total approximate cost of Rs. 21 lacs and the entire amount was borne by Indian Government. The first event which is organised at the Gateway of India on 28th February 1948 was the passing of the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry. It was the time when British rule ended in India and the last set of their troops left India. The monument is built in Basalt and indissoluble concrete and has three arches. The height of the structure is twenty six metres (85 feet) from the ground. The architectural style used in the structure is Indo- saracenic style. The diameter of the central dome of the structure is 15 metres or 49 feet. there are four turrets in the monument. There are steps behind the grand structure to take you to the Arabian Sea.George Wittet was the architect who designed the structure with an influence of Mughal as well as Guajarati architecture. Gammon India was the architect firm who took the responsibility to design the monument. The current owner of this monument is Archaeological Survey of India. The Gateway of India is situated at the end of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg close to the water’s edge at the Arabian Sea. Initially this harbour was a crude jetty and the place was used by the fishing community of Mumbai but later seeing its location the place is renovated and converted into prime landing place for British rulers in India. at one point of time this structure welcomed visitors coming to India by sea ways using boats or ships.Currently it has become a must visit point for every tourist who visits India or Mumbai. The surroundings of the monument are usually crowded with visitors, small vendors, big balloon sellers, photographers, food stalls, etc. the other attractions situated at a short distance from the monument is the famous Elephants Caves which is reachable using motor boats. At the entrance of the caves you will find the statues of Shivaji Maharaj and Swami Vivekananda. The Taj Mahal Hotel which is one of the most prestigious hotels of India is situated quite close to the gateway of India. Any time of day one visit this monument as there is no restrictions. If you talk about the season then after monsoon period that is from October to March is good as the climate is not that humid and hot.AccessibilityChhatrapati Shivaji terminus is located just 2.5 kilometres from the Gateway of India. Churchgate is 2.4 kilometres from the place.
