Freemasons Hall – The Finest Mansion in Tamil Nadu

Freemason's-HallBuildings and monuments sometimes become excellent examples of architecture of that time. During the British rule it was easy for British to create mansion or churches in whatever style they want and where ever they want on the foreign soil as they had nothing to lose. British had built many forts and mansions in south India. Some of their creations became famous while some others were criticised. Let me take you to one such mansion created by East India Company in the year 1923. Who so ever supervised or designed the mansion I guess was fan of Greek architecture because you can see the reflection of Greek architecture in the building. This building is known as Freemasons Hall. It is located at the Egmore area of Commander in Chief Road in Chennai. Though the name is quite unique but the building is one of the finest monuments of Chennai. It can be considered a living legend as it reflects the cultural and traditional heritage of ancient Chennai which was known as Madras at that time.It is basically a two storied structure with different chambers. The four huge pillars, creative use of fine Italian tiles and marbles in the interiors can give you a hint that the architecture of the building is inspired by Greek architecture. The purpose to build this mansion was to provide military lodge facility to the British soldiers. This mansion has a huge hall with a capacity to accommodate 200 persons at a time. On the first floor there is a small lodging room that can house about sixty people at a time. It was used to hold Masonic meetings by British. Apart from this small hall there is a dining hall on the first floor with a maximum capacity to accommodate one hundred and fifty persons at a time. You can reach this dining hall by using a beautiful staircase made up of sholingar stones, wrought iron and metal grills. The entire structure is designed in such a way that plenty of fresh air and sunlight are available. Big sized windows which are twelve feet high from the floor have been installed in the two lodge rooms to allow maximum natural light and fresh air into the rooms.Masonic emblems made of plaster can be seen on the walls. In the wide verandas fine Italian tiles are used. By observing the design and construction of the building the climate of the area was kept in mind. All possible modern day requirements are fulfilled in this building creation. This structure is almost ninety years old now but regular maintenance and renewal process keep this grand mansion as shiny and strong as new one.
