Goa is a fun place to stay that we all know but it also has rich history and historical monuments to explore. This fort has many fresh water springs inside it that was used to give water to ships that stopped here after coming from a long journey. Thus the fort got its name Fort Aguada. Passing by ships used to fill their fresh water tanks from Aguada. It had become a water source for these ships. Another interesting thing in Fort Aguada is the tall Lighthouse. It was constructed in the year 1864 a heighted about four storey that is quite tall. This Portuguese Light house is the oldest light house of this type in entire Asia. It is a huge fort and quite significant for Portuguese as it helped them to defend from Dutch and Marathas. It was also so spacious that it could have accommodated 70 to 80 cannons at a time. You can imagine its hugeness by the fact that it can gallop an entire peninsula at the south western tip of Bardez. The fort was properly protected from all sides. It was built to use it as a defense space by Portuguese and that is why it became very important for them during the time. Later on this Fort was also used as a prison by the Salazar administration. Among the prisoners there were mostly the Western tourists who locked up here for various drug relating crimes.Current statusCurrently there is a lavish beach resort at the place where the Aguada Fort was situated. This resort is known as Fort Aguada Beach Resort as the location of the fort does make sense to have a resort here. As the tourism got flourished in the area the Tata Group bought the land during 70’s and started the resort there.
