Qatar: Mashrabiya (Shanasheel) is the traditional Arabic window with wooden latticework. You can see them in many countries in Middle East and find them in homes belong to Muslim people and mosques all over the world. Its shape promotes natural cooling in hot summer season and preserve privacy at the same time. What if these complex patterns were decorated all over the façade of a high-rise building? Wouldn’t it be amazing and beautiful? Stop doing guess work because it’s already made. Standing 761 feet tall with a cylindrical composition, the Doha Tower (or Burj Doha) soars above Qatar in its bee-hive skin while bringing back the Islamic architecture back to the modern times.
Designed by award winning French architect Jean Nouvel, Doha Tower is a first of its kind skyscraper to formulate dia-grid reinforced concrete over the entire outer surface to create mashrabiya and butterfly shaped pattern to capture the light at every level and prevent heating.
Located at Corniche road overlooking the gulf waters, few metres from Ministries and Government Departments and 15 minutes from Doha International Airport, the unique Doha Tower is a purely commercial building offering office and VIP spaces and restaurants. The dimension of the building is 45 m diameter, height of 231.5 m (till the electrical conductor and have 46 stories) and a total built up area of approximately 110,000 square meters. The building has been made without a central core, providing more interior space. Named as the cousin of Burj Khalifa, Burj Doha received the ‘Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Skyscraper Award for the Best Tall Building Worldwide’ in 2012. It is owned by a Qatari Prince Sheikh Saud bin Muhammed Al Thani and cost Qatari Riyal 455 million/US$125 million. What amazes us is a fact that you can say bizarre or trivia but the shape of building is exactly like a phallus. However the architect calls it as ‘fully assumed virility’.Inside the tower
