Let me take you to a place that does not have any adventure or luxurious resorts but has peace and calm atmosphere amidst the tranquil beauty of nature. It is Dehu near Pune.Dehu is a place specially known for the great saint Sant Tukaram who born here, lived here and took his final breath here. Dehu is small town also known as Dehugaon comes under district of Pune in the state of Maharashtra. It may not be a great picnic spot but it is a favorite place for the followers of Sant Tukaram who does not need any introduction in Maharashtra. He was the main contributor to the Bhakti movement in the state. It is also a place which attracts hundreds of visitors during the month of Aashad which is also called the month of Palakhi. Palakhi is a festival celebrated by people once in a year in Aashad month. People come from all over India to participate in Palakhi festival. Saint Tukaram and Saint Dyaneshwar both were the famous names in spiritual and religious terms in Maharashtra and both have believed and prayed the same god named Vitthal. Sant Tukaram educated people how to worship and pray to almighty. He also created the Abhang which is still remembered as his greatest work.In the year 1723 the youngest son of Sant Tukaram built a beautiful temple to dedicate him. His name was Narayanbaba. This temple is known as Gatha Temple and is located on the banks of Indrayani River. The Rock which is known as the fasting place of Sant Tukaram is also kept here so that people can remember where he practiced his fast. The temple has many small and big tops that gives it a different look. You will find a perfectly stoned statue of Sant Tukaram just at the entrance of the Gatha Temple. In the statue he is holding a Tambura (a musical instrument of that time) in his hand. Inside the temple on the walls you can see about four thousand Abhangs (Verses, stanzas) which are written by Sant Tukaram. The sight of the temple is quite inviting and worth visiting. Apart from this Gatha Temple there are other temples too to make a visit. You can call Dehu a religious place.There is an Ashram in Dehu called Vaikunth Sthan which can be on your visit list while exploring Dehu. This small town definitely makes you in the mood to meditate and enjoy the bird singing. People here speak Marathi as well as Hindi language. Though it is a small town having a population less than 6000 as per government Census 2001 but is surrounded by forts, caves, hillocks and rivers. Famous Bhaja and Karla Buddhist caves are situated nearby and can make your trip memorable. Within a short distance you can enjoy nearby tourist attractions.
