CST – A Historic Architectural Landmark

CST-MumbaiMumbai city has many historic architectural structures being prominent landmarks of the city. One such structure is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus which is in short called CST. Initially it was known as VT which means Victoria Terminus. Situated at Dr. Dadabhai Naoroji Road in Bori Bandar area of city CST station is the headquarters of Central Railways in Mumbai. Being a grand Victorian structure this terminus is declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2004. This famous railway station represents Victorian Gothic style of architecture. The construction of the terminus started in May 1878 while it completed in May 1888. It took exactly ten years to create this historic building. This structure is a great reminder of hype of British Rule in India at that time. This station is currently one of the busiest railway stations of city connected to almost all parts of country via rail network. It not only serves as a terminal for long distance trains but also for commuter trains of Mumbai Suburban Railway. The terminus was designed by Frederick William Stevens who took inspiration from Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival architecture and mixed it with the traditional Mughal style of designing.It was named Victoria Terminus in order to honour Queen Victoria on her Golden Jubilee. In the year 1996 the station was renamed as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) and that is the official name of the terminus at present. Located at the heart of city it represents the mercantile facet of city. Though the city grew multi fold since the inception of this important terminus which is standing for more than a century but this structure is silently witnessing all the changes in city. City has many such structures of British era representing Gothic Architecture but this one is quite significant in terms of major mercantile activities.Initially there was Bori Bandar station at the eastern part of city and it was the main hub for commercial and trading activities. The first rail service was operated here in the 1850’s and it covered 34 kilometres of distance till Thane.But later on this station was redesigned and rebuilt by British and named Victoria Terminus. This structure is also special because it was the most expensive structure in that time period in Mumbai as the total cost incurred in constructing this terminus was Rs. 1614000 or $ 30000 of that time or 260000 sterling pounds. In the initial period this terminus was built to handle main rail traffic but in 1929 administrative headquarters were built by Central Railway. The buildings architecture has mixed impressions with Indian, Mughal and European styles being used with turrets, pointed arches, special eccentric ground plan, c shaped building layout, etc. are the main features of the structure. It also resembles the Indian Palace designs when observed closely. At the entrance you will find images of Lion and Tiger representing two countries Britain and India. Sandstone and lime stone are used to build the structure while in the interiors high quality Italian marble is used. The internal ceiling in the booking hall was painted in blue, gold, strong red on ground of rich blue originally.
