Bombay Natural History Society – A NGO Working towards Nature Conservation

Natural-History-SocietyAmong the many tourists’ attractions of Mumbai city BNHS has its own place. BNHS stands for Bombay Natural History Society. It is one of the largest Non Government Organisation in India established on 15th September 1883 with an aim to conserve wildlife and do biodiversity research. The head office of Bombay Natural History Society is located at Hornbill House at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Road in Mumbai. The organisation is actively engaged in various research projects and observations related to natural history along with exhibiting rare specimens.Apart from doing research the organisation is also involved in conservation of nature as well as natural resources and conducting various educational programmes related to exploration of natural history. Various rare wildlife specimen are exhibited at the Bombay Natural History Museum which is visited by several prominent naturalists, Ornithologists, nature scientists from the country as well as from around the globe in order to do various researches and observations. Among the display you will also find the popular Purple Frog, the Indian Canopy Frog, the first Asian Leaf Folding Frog, etc. at the Natural History Museum.You may be surprised to know that there are more than thirty countries are the members of this organisation and they all actively participate in the research and observation projects of natural history. The museum here has different sections and galleries to display the specimen. The works of this organisation is not limited here as they also publish a journal quarterly and it is called The Journal of Bombay Natural History Society.They also come with a quarterly magazine known as Hornbill. The organisation works completely on grants and donations. Nature enthusiasts from around the world come to visit the organisation and also donate rare specimen to this organisation. Some of the famous Naturalists attached to the organisation are Ornithologists Dr. Salim Ali and S. Dillon Repley. For its honest commitment towards nature the Bombay Natural History Society has got the International Awards. The organisation also backs up various research projects using grants. Dr. Salim Ali was the late President of the BNHS and guided the society in the field of conservation of nature and natural resources.Initially started by four people, two Englishmen and two Indians the society now is world recognised for its contribution in conservation of nature. They started with exchanging research notes initially in an office made available by Mr. Phipson but later on this small effort took the shape of a huge NGO working in the field of natural research and conservation projects.It was Mr. Phipson who always wanted to have a large museum and his plant was materialised on 15th august 1905. In 1933 the natural history section was created on the occasion of silver jubilee programme and a logo for Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) was created. This logo has a picture of Hornbill which was actually known as William and once lived at the grounds of society for years. Some of the programmes conducted by the BNHS are the IBA Programme, ecological and behavioural study of endangered Forest Owlet, research on almost extinct Vulture in India, conservation and educational campaign for Great Indian Bustard, Bird branding training programme, etc.Though the BNHS does not allow general public to visit the place but a prior permission can be taken if you are keen to visit the place.
