Bhadra Fort – The Most Famous Ancient Grandeur of Ahmedabad

There are many places to visit in Ahmedabad but if you looking for some historical monument then explore the ancient fort called Bhadra Fort in the city. This fort is said to be constructed during fifteenth century around 1411 by Ahmed Shah who is also known as the founder of Ahmedabad city and thus the city named after him. This fort has the name Bhadra which is derived from the name of one of the incarnation of Goddess Kali. It has got the name as the fort houses a beautiful holy shrine of Hindus dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakalicalled Bhadrakali temple. This fort is very popular among tourists as it has royal palaces and well maintained lush green gardens. The Bhadra Fort is spread over an area of 44 acres and this area is inclusive of green gardens and grand buildings.There is a Teen Darwaja at the eastern side of the Fort. It is the place from where the Royal Rulers (Sultan) had watched processions going from palace to Jama Mosque at the time of Islamic auspicious days in the year. The entrance gate which has three arches is being carved opulently. This gate was used by Royals to enter the Fort.The Bhadra Kali temple here is quite famous among visitors. It was created during Maratha rule in 1411 A D. When this Hindu Shrine was built here Ahmedabad city was under Maratha control.  While exploring the fort does take you century back into the history. The beauty of the fort lies in its architecture which includes complicatedly carved balconies of royal houses, carved arches of doors, delicate jail work on windows, etc. You can also find the Islamic inscriptions on the arches of the fort.  You are allowed to get inside the royal rooms of Kings as well as the prisons to keep criminals, Royal court and common halls of this grand historic structure.  If you want to visit the roof top of the palace fort then you need the permission from Government authorities that are maintaining the Bhadra Fort. From roof top you get views of surroundings of the fort.Currently there are many government offices operating from here. The fort is now used to flag hosting during National festivals of Independence Day and Republic Day.
