Benaulim – Quite and Clean Beach Town of Southern Goa

Goa is paradise for beach lovers. Goa has the advantage of having multiple beaches that gives the tourists to scatter and enjoy different angles of being in Goa.  Let me take you one such beach town that is popular for its clear water, sparkling sand and less crowded coastline. It is Benaulim. This name was being given to the place by Portuguese. The Indian name of this place is Banavali which is located in the district of Salacete of Goa.   The nearest popular place is Margao.  Benaulim is situated just 3 to 4 kilometres from West of Margao while Panaji is approximately 41 kilometres from here. The famous Colva beach is just 2 kilometres away from Benaulim beach.  Apart from being serene and unscathed beach there is another speciality of this place and that is the rare species of fish which is found here. it attracts many fishers to this place.There is a mythological story attached to this place that connects this small beach town to the great legend Parshuram. As per the Hindu Shastra Lord Vishnu’s one of the incarnation was Parshuram. He was staying at the Sahyadri mountain ranges when he shot an arrow and the arrow directly landed at the place where this town is situated today. It is said that his arrow has created this beautiful town. That is why the town got its Hindu name Banavali which can be understood as a village of the arrows. In Hindi Ban means arrow. But later when Portuguese arrived and ruled here they changed the name of this town from Banavali to Benaulim.Apart from magnificent beaches Benaulim is a spot for rosewood furniture as well as unique carvings on wood pieces. If we talk about Goa and churches are not there in our list, it is just impossible. There are two popular churches are also situated here. One is St. John the Baptist and the other one is Nossa Senhora De Merces Church. The first one is located at a hill and represents Christian style architecture while other churches here have an influence of Portuguese architecture in them. Sao Joao is kind of festival of thanks giving celebrated at the St. John church when monsoon begins. It is a popular event in Benaulim. People celebrate this in traditional style by wearing garlands of fruits and leaves, singing, dancing and gift each other. They also honour St. John’s movement by jumping in wells.  The Nossa Senhora De Merces Church has attractive architecture of ancient time. It also has an impressive statue of Menino Jesus. The church is famous for the event of Fama of Menino Jesus. This church is said to be built in the seventeenth century.The tradition of bull fighting can be seen here from October to May every year in which bulls fight in open spaces. It sounds scary but it happens here. Every Sunday you can enjoy the beach Bonanza fair at the Benaulim beach. This place is a complete package for enjoyment as you get the chance to explore so much here apart from relaxing on one of the most calm and serene beaches in Goa.
